Raiders win Emporia title

? The Lawrence Raiders opened the Sam Ellis baseball tournament with two losses.

They finished it with four straight victories — and the tournament championship.

Avenging three earlier losses to the same team — including one in the Sam Ellis tournament — the Raiders beat Olathe South, 5-4, in the title game Sunday.

“One of the things I told them is, even when we were losing some games, we kept talking more about the long haul and a vision to what we’re doing,” Raiders coach Wilson Kilmer said. “A lot of the guys haven’t been playing the positions they’re playing now. I told them to get a vision and see ourselves winning this thing. Olathe South had gotten us three times in a row. But we got the one that counted.”

Drew Noble (1-1) pitched a complete game in the championship for the Raiders.

Lawrence beat Salina, 9-1, Sunday in the semifinals before defeating Olathe South.

Ryan Scott (1-1) earned the victor in the semifinals, while Matthew Abel went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two doubles.

The Raiders (4-4) will play host to the Kansas City Sluggers at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at Ice Field.
