Police seek information in weekend robberies downtown

June 8, 2009

A 27-year-old Lawrence man was robbed early Saturday morning while walking alone in a downtown Lawrence alley, police said Monday.

“A vehicle came up from behind him and stopped next to the victim,” said Sgt. Bill Cory, Lawrence police spokesman. “The passenger leaned out the window, armed with a handgun, and told the victim to give up his wallet.”

The robbery happened between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday, in the east alley of the 900 block of Massachusetts Street, Cory said.

After the victim handed over his wallet, the car, an older red Cadillac with a white top, gold rim wheels and whitewall tires — left the area. Police said there was also duct tape near the car’s tail lights.

Police are looking for two suspects, described as black men between 20 and 30 years old. The passenger had square diamond earrings in both ears and was wearing a red “KC” ball cap, Cory said.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the robbery should call Lawrence police at 832-7509, or leave an anonymous message on the TIPS hot line at 843-TIPS (8477).

The robbery occurred about three hours after a strong-arm robbery Friday night in South Park. Further information about the earlier robbery was not immediately available from police on Monday.

Hey! I got pulled over twice this weekend in my 76 Chrysler because of that armed robbery. The cops said they were looking for a Cadillac and let me go. Now i read that the Cadillac was red with a white top, my car is brown?! I don't get it?

I am sure they are thinking that in the darkness of an alley at night dark red and brown can look fairly similar....

People that rob are too stupid to find real work. It's true that the incompetent find refuge in violence.

If you post racist jokes about a late night robbery on the Lawrence Journal World website.... YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK!

Isn't that kind of like robbing people in an ice cream van? That might even have been less conspicuous. I'm sure robbers don't post here, but if any do, ...even a job serving food @ McD's pays better in the long run than robbing if you look at everything involved.

Or people could stop walking down dark alleys in the early morning hours.

Just a thought.

ya Jafs, go ahead and be scared to go out and enjoy the city you pay taxes to support. This is still my town and my country, i'll walk anywhere i damned well please. the victim got a great description, and a little police work in the surrounding area (topeka, KC) will easily find a red caddy with a white top & gold rims.

being robbed is no joke. the person that got robbed is a relative of mine and it ticks me off that people are making jokes about it!! how would you feel to have a gun shoved in your face??!! wow. thank god they got away with just his wallet and not his life.

seriously, if you have any information it would be greatly appreciated. i've had people tell me the car is a local vehicle, but haven't seen it recently (go figure). thanks to those that care and understand!
