Police seek information in weekend robberies downtown

A 27-year-old Lawrence man was robbed early Saturday morning while walking alone in a downtown Lawrence alley, police said Monday.

“A vehicle came up from behind him and stopped next to the victim,” said Sgt. Bill Cory, Lawrence police spokesman. “The passenger leaned out the window, armed with a handgun, and told the victim to give up his wallet.”

The robbery happened between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday, in the east alley of the 900 block of Massachusetts Street, Cory said.

After the victim handed over his wallet, the car, an older red Cadillac with a white top, gold rim wheels and whitewall tires — left the area. Police said there was also duct tape near the car’s tail lights.

Police are looking for two suspects, described as black men between 20 and 30 years old. The passenger had square diamond earrings in both ears and was wearing a red “KC” ball cap, Cory said.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the robbery should call Lawrence police at 832-7509, or leave an anonymous message on the TIPS hot line at 843-TIPS (8477).

The robbery occurred about three hours after a strong-arm robbery Friday night in South Park. Further information about the earlier robbery was not immediately available from police on Monday.
