Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Now that the Kansas Turnpike’s Exit 204 in North Lawrence is back open — after a project finished four days ahead of time — the focus on traffic-detouring work turns to Ninth Street and a number of other major road projects scheduled for this week:

Lawrence

• Work to revamp Ninth Street, from Iowa to Tennessee streets, begins Monday. The major disruption begins Wednesday, when crews close Ninth to through traffic from Iowa to Avalon Road. That closure is set to last until the second week of July, as crews realign and rebuild the intersection of Ninth and Avalon. The project — to repave and make other upgrades from Iowa to Tennessee — is scheduled to be finished by Aug. 7.

• City crews are scheduled to fill cracks this week on 19th Street, from Massachusetts Street to Haskell Avenue; 11th Street, east from Massachusetts; and Wakarusa Drive, from Sixth Street to Clinton Parkway. Such work will close several hundred feet of a single lane at a time.

• Drivers may encounter brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• Traffic continues to be limited along streets adjacent to the construction site for The Oread, near the northern end of Kansas University’s main campus. Recently added to the closures: 11th Street, from Indiana to Mississippi streets.
