Raiders advance to semifinals

The Lawrence Raiders pounded 14 hits and stole six bases, and Jack Bush scattered five hits over four innings in a 14-5 American Legion baseball victory over McPherson on Saturday in the Sam Ellis baseball tournament. The Raiders went on to win their second game of the night as well, 9-1, against the Wichita Reds.

The Raiders (2-4) broke Game 1 open with a seven-run second inning in their first victory of the season.

In Game 2, the Raiders didn’t commit an error, which was most pleasing to coach Wilson Kilmer.

“That’s the thing we’ve most been talking about — keeping our composure instead of trying to do too much and forcing plays,” Kilmer said. “We just need to relax. We’ve been doing a better job.”

Bryan Kindle finished the second game 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Taylor Gentry struck out four on the mound and earned his first victory of the season, improving to 1-1.

Lawrence will play in the semifinals at 2 p.m. today against Salina. If the Raiders win, they will play in the title game later this evening.
