From the Lawrence Daily World for June 7, 1909: State food inspectors were here today and have been paying particular attention to some bakeries which reportedly are not up to standard. Unsanitary sites are to be totally scrubbed out before any goods can go for public use, officials say. Bakers in particular have been told to stop smoking cigarettes while they work. . . .The annual commencement at Eudora High School included nine youngsters, one girl and eight boys. In Lawrence there were far more girls than boys. . . . The first carload of electric line material has arrived here and there is talk that work will begin in about a week. . . . The strawberry crop around Lawrence is due to be short about 3,000 crates and the shortage will be noticed more and more as shipments are light. The May 1 freeze and frost were devastating and that is sad because our area long has been recogized as the strawberry center of the Kaw Valley. . . . Journeymen carpenters are asking that their wages of 35 cents an hour be raised at least three cents. They will complete current contracts but want raises in the next ones.
