Douglas County teens injured in ATV accident

A Douglas County girl was flown to a Topeka hospital Thursday after she lost control of the all-terrain vehicle she was driving south of Lawrence.

Another girl was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after the accident, which occurred about 5 p.m.

Douglas County Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said Sierra B. Randall, 16, was driving the Polaris Sportsman ATV east on North 680 Road, just west of the former Zarco 66 gasoline station on U.S. Highway 59.

As Randall approached a curve on the gravel road, the ATV went through a puddle of water. She lost control of the ATV in the mud, and the vehicle tipped on its side, Hornberger said.

A LifeStar air ambulance crew flew Randall to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka for treatment. Her passenger, Sandina Oxford, 16, of rural Lawrence, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and later released.

Oxford said Randall would likely be released from Stormont-Vail on Friday.
