Local law enforcement agencies miss out on federal funds

Local law enforcement agencies on Tuesday were denied federal stimulus money to hire new officers.

The Obama administration announced the recipients of $1 billion in Community Oriented Policing Services funding, which included only 10 of the 85 Kansas communities that applied for it. The money is part of the $787 billion stimulus package passed earlier this year.

Kansas agencies had requested $34.6 million to hire 205 officers, but will be receiving funding for only 29. The $5.2 million in COPS money the state received is slightly more than the minimum 5 percent each state is guaranteed through the program.

Kansas City, Kan., is getting about $2.4 million to hire 12 officers, while Topeka will receive $1.1 million to hire seven. The state’s biggest city, Wichita, will receive about $409,000 to hire two officers.

The Lawrence and Eudora police departments and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were among agencies that did not rank high enough in multiple categories to receive funding.
