Wheel Genius: Road work planned this week

Among major road projects scheduled in the area for the coming week:

Lawrence

• Lane closures and a detour are set to be in place by late Thursday at the intersection of North Second and Locust streets, which is set for reconstruction in North Lawrence. One lane will be open for traffic heading south on North Second; traffic heading north will be steered onto a detour involving Elm, North Third and — after crossing the Union Pacific railroad tracks — Lyon streets.

• Traffic heading south along Naismith Drive will be reduced to one lane between 18th and 23rd streets, for repaving; lanes of Naismith also are expected to be closed at the intersection with 23rd, as that portion of the intersection is rebuilt. A single lane of Naismith will be closed for traffic moving north, between 19th Terrace and 18th Street, and from 23rd to 22nd Terrace.

• Drivers may encounter brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• Traffic continues to be limited along streets adjacent to the construction site for The Oread, near the northeastern end of Kansas University’s main campus.

Douglas County

• Douglas County Road 438, also known as the Farmers’ Turnpike, is closed for reconstruction from the South Lawrence Trafficway to County Road 1029, which heads north toward Lecompton. A detour is available using the trafficway, U.S. Highway 40, and County Road 1029. The project is scheduled for completion by Thanksgiving.

• Douglas County Road 1057 is closed for pavement reconstruction between Kansas Highway 10 and County Road 442, about midway between Lawrence and Eudora. The project is expected to last until mid-August.

• The Douglas County Road 1061 bridge that crosses the Kansas River, north of Eudora, is down to one lane for resurfacing work that is expected to last until Aug. 14. Temporary signals will direct traffic on the bridge, and delays are expected to last for three minutes.

• An 11-mile resurfacing project begins Monday along U.S. Highway 24, from the intersection with U.S. Highway 59 in Williamstown in Jefferson County to the Douglas/Jefferson County line. Work is scheduled to occur from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays through early September. Flaggers will coordinate with pilot cars to escort vehicles through the work zone, leading to expected traffic delays of up to 15 minutes.

Interstate 70

• The left lane for traffic heading west on Interstate 70, from 110th to 86th streets in Wyandotte County, will be closed until 7 p.m. Monday for pavement reconstruction.

Interstate 35

• Drivers heading in both directions along Interstate 35, from Interstate 435 in Johnson County to State Line Road, will face intermittent lane closures in the left two lanes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, as crews patch pavement.

U.S. Highway 69

• The left lane for traffic heading north on U.S. Highway 69 in Johnson County will be closed from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Tuesday for paving work between Interstate 435 and 87th Street. The left lane on U.S. 69 will be closed to traffic heading south from Interstate 35 to I-435 through Wednesday evening, for resurfacing work.

U.S. Highway 24

• Traffic heading east on U.S. Highway 24 in Shawnee County will be limited to one lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Kansas Avenue to the Kansas Highway 4 interchange, for pavement repairs.

• Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction Monday and Tuesday along U.S. Highway 24 in Topeka, at its intersection with Kansas Avenue. Kansas Avenue will be closed at the intersection.

• Northbound Stover Road — the 25th Street exit, the first exit east of U.S. Highway 75 — at U.S. 24 will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for concrete repairs underneath the bridge in Shawnee County.

Kansas Highway 92

• A resurfacing project for 21.5 miles of Kansas Highway 92 — from the junction with Kansas Highway 16 in McLouth to 15th Street in the city of Leavenworth — is limiting traffic to get through the work zone with assistance from flaggers and pilot cars, leading to delays of up to 15 minutes. The project is expected to last into October.
