Norman takes Senior British lead

Greg Norman plays from the second fairway during the third round of the Senior British Open. Norman shot a 64 on Saturday at Sunningdale, England.

Greg Norman shot a bogey-free 6-under 64 on Saturday to grab the lead by a stroke heading into the last round of the Senior British Open.

Norman was at 10-under 200, a stroke ahead of overnight leader Fred Funk (72) and Loren Roberts (67).

Tom Watson’s hopes of improving on his runner-up spot in the British Open last week took a hit after a 70 that left him six shots behind Norman.

Watson’s putter remained cold, despite an overnight grip change following similar problems on Friday.

“I had five three-putts. I wasted a good ball-striking day,” he said. “I hit it very well and made absolutely nothing on the greens, although I did make a 60-footer (on the 13th hole) and a 30-footer (on the fifth). Otherwise, I was missing everything. Everything was right, everything pushed. Maybe I ought to aim left. I don’t have very good speed control on these greens.”

Norman found the right speed in a solid round.

“I put the ball in play and putted decently,” he said. “I got on the tee and could see the shots I wanted to play and just went and played them. I really wasn’t worried about anything else.”

The Shark loves the Sunningdale course, where he played often and won during his years on the European Tour.

“I feel comfortable around this golf course,” Norman said.

Funk dropped his first shot of the week at the tough second hole, then double-bogeyed the 12th and bogeyed 14.

Larry Mize also shot a 64, and Bernhard Langer, Ben Crenshaw and defending champion Bruce Vaughan all had 65s. Langer has a share of seventh place, four shots behind Norman, as he bids for his fifth Champions Tour victory of the year.

Three tied atop Evian

Evian-Les-Bains, France — Becky Brewerton of Wales shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday to grab a share of the Evian Masters lead for the third consecutive round. Brewerton heads into today’s final round tied with Sophie Gustafson of Sweden — who had a 5-under 67 on Saturday — and In-Kyung Kim of South Korea at 12-under 204.

American Michelle Wie improved her chances of qualifying for the Solheim Cup against Europe next month, clenching a fist as her birdie putt on the 18th crept toward the hole before dropping in for a 70 that got her to 3 under for the tournament and a tie for 23rd.

Dufner leads Canadian Open

Oakville, Ontario — Jason Dufner threatened to shoot in the 50s, then settled for a 9-under 63. Mark Calcavecchia made a PGA Tour-record nine straight birdies Saturday at the rainy Canadian Open.

Soon after Dufner finished the second round in light rain Saturday, heavy showers hit the already-saturated Glen Abbey course, forcing tour officials to postpone the third round until this morning.

Dufner eagled the par-5 13th to reach 9 under for the round, but played the final five holes in even par — birdieing the par-5 16th, dropping a stroke on the par-4 17th and saving par on the par-5 18th after hitting into the water.

At 13 under at softened Glen Abbey, Dufner had a one-stroke advantage over Jerry Kelly (67) and 2001 winner Scott Verplank (67). Nathan Green (65), Peter Tomasulo (68), Martin Laird (69), Pat Perez (67), Camilo Villegas (71), Bob Estes (67), Retief Goosen (69) and Kevin Na (71) were 10 under.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified third despite a stomach virus that has Brad Keselowski on standby in case Earnhardt is too ill to race.

Bill Elliott, the 2002 winner at The Brickyard, qualified fourth. David Reutimann rounded out the top five.

Sterling Marlin, Max Papis and Derrike Cope failed to qualify.

Edwards wins Nationwide

Clermont, Ind. — Carl Edwards came from the back of the pack to win the Nationwide Series race at O’Reilly Raceway Park. Edwards started in 42nd out of 43 drivers because he spent the day at the Brickyard 400 qualifying. He got into Saturday’s race because of owner points. He moved up 15 spots by the end of the fourth lap, and took the lead for good in lap 179. Kyle Busch finished second. The series points leader won the event in 2004 and 2008.

Trevor Bayne, an 18-year-old who earned the pole, finished seventh. He led the first 34 laps before making contact with Steve Wallace and falling out of contention.

Matt Kenseth, who drove at ORP for the first time in 10 years, finished third.
