Shots outside bar lead to arrest at complex

A 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was arrested early Saturday morning after several gunshots were fired off outside the Cross Town Tavern.

A little after midnight Saturday, witnesses near Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave., reported hearing between one to 10 shots, Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said. At least one vehicle was struck by a bullet.

Abruptly after the incident, two vehicles were seen leaving the area, witnesses said. The vehicles, a beige-colored Chevrolet and a two-toned Ford Explorer, were believed to have fled the scene heading west on 19th Street.

No one was injured in the incident, although a 50-year-old woman was sitting in her car in the parking lot when a bullet narrowly missed her, Hadl said.

Shortly after the incident, security guards at a residential complex near 16th Street and Haskell Avenue saw a vehicle enter the complex that matched the description of one involved in the incident.

A 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man and a 24-year-old Lawrence man were inside the vehicle, police said.

A revolver was found in the vicinity of the vehicle.

The 22-year-old was arrested on charges of felony possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance without tax stamp.

Last summer, one man was shot at a large party in the parking lot outside the Cross Town Tavern. Since then, there have been reports of gun shots fired, a stabbing and another incident involving a man waving a gun outside the bar.
