Cards trade for outfielder Holliday

? The busy St. Louis Cardinals have added a big bat for their pennant drive.

They acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and cash from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for a package of prospects. And Holliday was in the Cardinals’ lineup in left field and batting cleanup behind slugger Albert Pujols for Friday night’s game against the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies.

“You look at the lineup card and it’s exciting,” St. Louis outfielder Ryan Ludwick said. “You take a hitter like him and it’s instant offense. A player of that caliber, it adds a lot of excitement. We’re in first. This will push us to get a lot more.”

The A’s receive power-hitting third baseman Brett Wallace, a top offensive player in the St. Louis farm system. Outfielder Shane Peterson and right-hander Clayton Mortensen also will come to the Oakland organization.

The first-place Cardinals have been looking to add another hitter in the middle of the lineup to support Pujols. St. Louis already acquired utilityman Mark DeRosa from the Cleveland Indians late last month and then shortstop Julio Lugo in a Wednesday swap with the Boston Red Sox.

Holliday has struggled in his first season with the A’s, batting .286 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs.

Oakland traded for Holliday during the winter knowing he might only be with the club for half a season. A’s general manager Billy Beane acknowledged as much at the time.

The 29-year-old Holliday had his best game for Oakland at home on Monday, hitting two home runs with a grand slam.

Sunningdale, England — Fred Funk shot a 5-under 65 for a three-shot lead at the Senior British Open on Friday. He is a tournament-record 11 under through two rounds and leads Tom Watson by seven shots.

Funk has gone 36 holes without a bogey and his round, capped by a 174-yard 8-iron at the last hole for an eagle 2, gave him an 11-under 129, a 36-hole record total for the event.

He has a three-stroke lead over Sam Torrance, who also shot 65 and 2006 winner Loren Roberts another two shots back at 134.

Watson, trying to follow up his British Open runner-up finish on Sunday with a fourth Senior British Open title, shot 69 to share sixth place.

Court rules for NASCAR

Indianapolis — An appeals court has ruled in NASCAR’s favor, granting its request to keep Jeremy Mayfield off the race track.

The decision Friday by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals means Mayfield is once again suspended for failing a May 1 random drug test. U.S. District Court Graham Mullen, who allowed Mayfield to return to competition, still has a request before him to overturn his earlier decision based on NASCAR’s claim that Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine a second time.

Hornaday wins truck race

Clermont, Ind. — Ron Hornaday Jr. held off a late challenge from Mike Skinner to win the AAA Insurance 200, making him the first driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to win four consecutive races.

Hornaday, the three-time series champion, had won at Milwaukee, Memphis and Kentucky. Hornaday and Skinner ran side-by side several times in the final laps on Friday, but Hornaday held on.

Five drivers had shared the record of three wins in a row: Hornaday (1997 and 2009), Skinner (1996 and 2007), Greg Biffle (2000), Todd Bodine (2005) and Johnny Benson (2008).

Caitlin Shaw, a 19-year-old driver making her trucks debut, lost control and backed into the turn three retaining wall during the 38th lap. She returned and finished 24th.

Practice results satisfactory

Indianapolis — Goodyear officials were confident their new tires will perform as well on race day as they did in Friday’s practice sessions at Indianapolis. Race tire sales director Greg Stucker said one driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., ran 27 laps on a set of tires and could have run more.

That’s a major improvement over what happened during last year’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. That race turned into a series of 10 to 12-lap sprints because of excessive tire wear.

Beckham fined $1,000

New York — David Beckham was fined $1,000 by Major League Soccer, which said his gestures toward taunting fans suggested that they leave their seats and come on the field.

The fine by MLS commissioner Don Garber on Friday came five days after the English star confronted Los Angeles Galaxy fans in a group called the L.A. Riot Squad. The Galaxy and AC Milan played to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game. Beckham played with AC Milan this year and was booed through much of the game.

At halftime, Beckham walked toward the group while shouting and pointing. He challenged fans to meet him on the field and tried to lift himself over advertising boards before security intervened. Police arrested a fan who left the stands.

Leagues sue to block betting

Washington — The four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA sued Delaware Friday, seeking to block the state from implementing sports betting.

Delaware’s sports betting plan “would irreparably harm professional and amateur sports by fostering suspicion and skepticism that individual plays and final scores of games may have been influenced by factors other than honest athletic competition,” the leagues and NCAA said in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Delaware.
