July 21, 2009

Lawrence Police responded Monday night to an armed robbery call from the BP gas station at 3020 Iowa Street.

According to the station clerk, a black male about six feet tall with a thin build entered the station armed with a handgun around 10:17 p.m. The suspect demanded money from the clerk and then fled, exiting through the emergency door of the station. The suspect then entered the driver's side door of a dark blue Honda vehicle and left the scene heading in an unknown direction.

The suspect was wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt, jeans and was carrying a tan bag. The clerk also said the man had acne scars on his face.

Lawrence Police do not have any suspects in custody.

Anyone with information about the robbery should call Crimestoppers, at 843-8477 (TIPS).

I don't think stoning is too far out of the question.

Senseless...BP should put up one of those "No Handgun" signs, that way the perp would not have entered the store!

Is that the one by Home Depot??? If it is, I have problems just getting back on the street without waiting forever.

aside from the fact that the interior of the store sells candy/pop/cigarettes and I'm sure that accounts for a great deal of their profits, I'm honestly surprised in this day in age when everyone has a credit card, that more gas stations don't go to exclusively pay at the pump with no actual store front or employees, similar to the way most car washes run. Just seems like gas stations get hit with armed robberies at a disproportionately high rate relative to other businesses.

$5 the Lawrence PD doesn't catch this guy....catching armed robbers is not their strongest area of enforcement. I guess they don't really have a strong area of enforcement. Oh wait, they are good a giving traffic tickets, MIPs, and other meaningless offenses that don't help to keep this city safe. Keep up the good work!

I hope this man is identified and captured before he does another holdup.

Clerks and attendants at gas stations, fast food restaurants and convenience stores rarely get the public respect they deserve. It takes a special kind of bravery to work in these business environments that are so ripe for violent theft attempts. My hat's off to all such employees; their courage is greatly appreciated.

Wow, 13 comments and nobody said anything about Topeka or KC. Not the easiest place to make a getaway from I wouldn't think. Then again, armed robbers are pretty low in the hierarchy of crooks. Takes a certain...well, stupidity for lack of a better word. Plus it is just mean. Those attendants make chump change and THIS is what they have to put up with. Cops get paid extra because of the potential danger, but I would almost bet that more counter jockeys have guns in their faces than cops on any given day. And they don't usually have the advantage of having a gun on their belt. Or get compensated properly for what they put up with .

I bet if you couldn't get a concealed and carry permit this wouldn't happen. I'm sure the perp went to the training courses and back ground checks then payed the money to have his ccp. I hope they catch him and his permit is suspended. And yes your correct nut_case a trained ccp holder wouldn't have entered the store if the correct signage was posted
