Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 19, 1909: “Richard Ballinger, Secretary of the Interior, may visit Haskell Institute and confer with Superintendent H.B. Peairs. The superintendent wants Ballinger to see the fine work being done here. … Ed Reynolds, the second child to be born in Lawrence, has died. He was born in 1855 when only a few cottages made up the town of Lawrence. … Gov. W.R. Stubbs is pressing for experts to study the insurance business and make sure that rates are fair and that there is no rate-gouging under the new laws. … The private roadway to the home of Gov. Stubbs west of town is likely to be the most beautiful private drive in the state.”
