Baldwin Boy Scout Troop 65 reached a milestone in June as it recorded its 65th consecutive year of participation in summer camp at Theodore Naish Scout Reservation, east of Bonner Springs.

Troop 65 sent 16 Scouts and 10 adult Scouts to the first session, June 7-13. Baldwin Scouts have gone to summer camp at Naish since 1931, and consecutively since 1944. Naish officials have asked the troop to carve a 4-foot-high totem pole to be placed on the camp’s flag mall to commemorate their achievement.

Scoutmaster John Richards and senior patrol leader Dan Graves led the Baldwin Scouts. Also attending were assistant scoutmasters Joe Bollig, David Cook, Justin Cook, Tom Farmer, Jay Hundley, Robert “Sarge” Lawrenz, Michael Slavin and Ed Wasson. The troop camped at Chickasaw Campsite.

The weeklong camp offered opportunities for the Scouts to advance in rank, earn merit badges, and participate in many activities, notably induction into the Order of the Arrow, an honors camping society.

The Scouts earned 45 merit badges, some of which are required for Eagle rank:

• Archery: Kevin Graves and Morland Souders.

• Basketry: Alex Cigard and Garrett Hundley.

• Camping: Stephen Beegle, Scott Cromer, Kevin Graves, “Mac” Halpin, Ryan Hundley, Austin Kraus, Jack Mitchell and Dylan Slavin.

• Citizenship in the Nation: Royce Harrison.

• Citizenship in the World: Scott Cromer and Dylan Slavin.

• Emergency preparedness: Nathan Clem.

• Environmental science: Stephen Beegle, Nathan Clem, Dan Graves, Kevin Graves, “Mac” Halpin, Royce Harrison, Ryan Hundley, Austin Kraus, Jack Mitchell and Dylan Slavin.

• First aid: Alex Cigard and Garrett Hundley.

• Fish and wildlife management: Dan Graves and “Mac” Halpin.

• Indian lore: Nathan Clem, Austin Kraus and Jack Mitchell.

• Leatherworking: Alex Cigard and Dylan Slavin.

• Lifesaving: Scott Cromer, Ben Foster and Morland Souders.

• Metalworking: Dan Graves and “Mac” Halpin.

• Rifle shooting: Royce Harrison and Ryan Hundley.

• Sculpture: Ben Foster and Sam Richards.

• Woodcarving: Dylan Slavin.

Despite a chilly and rainy week, several members of the troop participated in aquatic activities. Stephen Beegle was the only member of the troop to complete the mile swim. Michael Slavin completed the BSA certification in snorkeling and the water portion of the BSA lifeguard certification. Ben Foster and Stephen Beegle completed the Discovering SCUBA program, and introductory course in the basics of scuba diving.

In other activities, Dylan Slavin was selected as the Pelathe District (Douglas County) youth representative to the Heart of America Council’s Committee on International Scouting. Only 13 Scouts from the Heart of America Council earned this honor.

The adult Scouters completed several training courses:

• Bollig, Farmer, Lawrenz, Richards and Wasson completed the safe swim defense course.

• Farmer, Hundley, and Wasson completed the scoutmaster/assistant scoutmaster training.

• Richards earned certification as a scoutmaster/assistant scoutmaster program instructor.

An important part of camp every year is participation in Order of the Arrow activities. On June 10, Dan Graves, Royce Harrison, Jack Mitchel and Michael Slavin became brotherhood members of OA. The ceremony took place in Whippoorwill Council Ring. David Cook and Justin Cook served as nimats (guides) during the brotherhood ceremonies.

On June 12, Nate Clem, Ben Foster, Dylan Slavin and Tom Farmer were “tapped out” for induction as ordeal candidates. This ceremony began in the camp council ring and concluded on the flag mall.

Members of Troop 65 filled their time at camp by participating in a variety of activities including campfires, hikes, swimming, woodcarving and “capture the flag.” During the campwide “Camp-O-Lympics” on June 11, the Scouts played mountain ball, carnival games, and held sword fights with foam rubber. Meanwhile, the adult Scouters shot skeet. Tom Farmer and Justin Cook won awards for perfect skeet scores.
