Beavers State Champs: Lawrence CTG U-9 Beavers won the Kansas USSSA Class A baseball tournament over the July 4th weekend in Kansas City. Team members are Zach McDermott, Luke Campbell, Aidan Goertz, Brendan Goscha, Carter Shook, Hunter Brown, Chase Hofer, Ryan Byrn, Max Denny, Harrison Hughes, Peyton Garvin and Zach McGowan. Coaches are John McDermott, Jay Garvin, Ron Garvin, John Hofer and Bill Byrn.

Rockets Advance: The Olathe Rockets, including five players from Lawrence and surrounding area, have qualified for the U-18 Gold Softball Nationals next month in Oklahoma City. Among the Rockets’ players are Rosie Hull and Maggie Hull of Free State High, Shelby Erickson of Perry, Lauren Himpel of Tonganoxie and Kendall Patterson of McLouth.

Cummins Champ: Tyler Cummins shot a one-over 73 and won the weekly Jayhawk Golf Club tournament Sunday at Alvamar by five strokes over Bud Stagg and six shots over Chris Anderson. In net scoring, Van Reichert and Curt Anderson were low with 72s. Mike Hertling had a 74.

Phenix-Fyler Wins: Lawrence Phenix-Fyler U-18 softball won the Kansas ASA Super B Tournament last weekend in Emporia. Jamie Jarrett paced the offense with seven hits in the six games. Jamie Morgison and Kristen Bell added six hits apiece. Taylor Simmons threw a two-hitter in the title game. Next is the USSSA Central World Series next week in Hutchinson.

Ortiz Second: Steve Ortiz of Lawrence finished second in a Central Pro-Am bass fishing tournament Saturday at Truman Lake in Missouri. Ortiz caught five fish that weighed 14.5 pounds and earned $1,500.

Red Dog Run: The Red Dog Run, a four-mile race or two-mile walk to benefit the Boys and Girls Club, will be Aug. 8 on the Kansas River trails. Early registration ends July 24. Go to bgclawrence.com or active.com to register.
