Downtown change

For years, Lawrence city officials have tried to sell the story that downtown Lawrence is the city’s main business center. They tried denying building permits for those who wanted to build large retail establishments on the edges of the city. They have denied building permits for construction of large retail facilities in downtown Lawrence.

They reversed themselves in recent years by OK’ing major retail developments along South Iowa Street and West Sixth Street. And, in an apparent attempt to enhance the historical nature of downtown, they have made it more difficult and more expensive for downtown property owners to modernize their buildings.

Despite the claims by city officials that the downtown is the core and heart of the city and that it must be protected, the fact is, retail sales figures generated by businesses along 23rd Street, South Iowa Street and West Sixth Street far exceed sales totals in downtown Lawrence.

Last week, the owners of Round Corner Pharmacy announced they were closing. A pharmacy has been operating at the 801 Mass. location since 1858, according to state officials. The closing of the Round Corner marks the end of the state’s longest continuously operating pharmacy.

This closure follows the recent closing of Arensberg’s Shoes, Silver Works and More, the Palace Gift Shop and Blue Heron and the move of Maurice’s to a South Iowa location.

An increasing number of interested and concerned business owners, as well as those who have touted the attractiveness and vitality of downtown, now are acknowledging the downtown area has become an entertainment hub rather than the city’s main business district.

What’s downtown going to look like five, 10 or 15 years from now? It’s been a source of great community pride for many years, but times are changing. How will this “change” alter the appearance and character of the area between Vermont and New Hampshire streets from Sixth to 11th streets? Will it be all bars, restaurants and specialty shops? Will there be any major retailers to help draw shoppers to the area?

It’s a serious matter!
