Carlos weakens to tropical storm in Pacific

? Hours after being downgraded from a hurricane, Tropical Storm Carlos weakened further Sunday night as it headed west over the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Carlos had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph, down from around 70 mph earlier Sunday, with tropical storm-force winds extending outward up to 60 miles from the eye of the storm, said the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. Some strengthening is forecast in the next day or two, the center said.

At 10 p.m. CDT, Carlos was centered about 1,230 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.
