Washington Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry wants Sen. Sam Brownback to lead a filibuster against the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
The founder of Operation Rescue spoke to reporters Wednesday outside Brownback’s Topeka office. The senator was in Washington.
Brownback spokesman Brian Hart noted that the Kansas Republican has said he will vote against the Sotomayor confirmation. But Hart added that he hadn’t heard of any plans for a filibuster.
Terry said he spoke to Brownback recently about a filibuster, but he declined to be specific about was said.
Terry is on a 15-city media tour that started Monday in Omaha, Neb. In Kansas, he also made stops in Kansas City and Wichita.

Vote against her based on what?
By all accounts she is a competent and qualified judge. There is no reasonable basis for trying to deny her seating.
Plus, apparently Randall can't count (surprise, surprise), seeing as how I don't think the Republicans have the numbers for a filibuster without pulling some more right-leaning Democrats, and I'm not sure if this is the issue that those Democrats want to be sticking their political necks out for…

Funny. Last think Brownback wanted to hear. He is trying to move to the middle to be less nutty so he can win the governor in KS. The filibuster will make him look like a nut.

Any pick will be pro-choice, so does the party really want to do this? “Elections have consequences” is a common quote I use a lot also “To the victor goes the spoils” .

Well… let's see… two options, two outcomes…
Option A) Brownback caves, follows through with Terry's orders, leads the filibuster (a mathematical impossibility at this point, I know, but just go with me a moment)… and damages his credibility with moderate and independent voters in Kansas.
Option B) Brownback refuses, Terry gets his panties in a bunch, throws a major hissy fit, spends several weeks and months painting Sam as a “fake conservative”… and Brownback damages his credibility with social and/or extreme conservative voters in Kansas.
If I were Sam, I'd take “B”—the extreme Right throws louder, longer hissy fits than any other political pedigree, but they're smaller in numbers. Winning elections has more to do with broad appeal, than base support.

Wasn't it just a few years ago that republicans were demanding only “up-or-down votes” on Supreme Court nominees? The republican party should just change their name to the Hypocrite Party.

Brownback is governor no matter what happens in the Senate. This is just not a fight the Republicans want, when government spending and taxes will be a fight they can win in 2010 and 2012.

The U.S.has sent terrorists to Guantanamo. Why has not Randall Terry been sent to Guantanamo? This man is head of a terrorist organization. Why is he still free to make these kind of statements? When will charges of accessory to murder be filed against Randall Terry? When will this terrorist organization be recognized for what it is and be destroyed? Answers, anyone??????

logicsound summed it all up. There's no legitimate basis to fight her nomination. And it's a shame the AP, Hart, and Terry collectively missed that there's no chance for a filibuster fundamentally.
If there was any leadership in the Republican party right now they might come to the conclusion they need to play nice right now. They're out-manned, out-gunned, and surrounded. Stickin' with the same ol' strategy and fighting everything because it's a partisan tradition will only make things worse for them.

Randall Terry has about as much credibilty as Fred Phelps. Both preach hatred. It's a sad irony that George Tiller and many U.S. soldiers are dead and yet Terry and Phelps live on to spread the good news that hate is good.
Despite that, God blesses them the same as our beloved soldiers fighting for our freedom to speak on this message board.

He'll vote against someone he hasn't personally talked to (and probably hasn't researched at all) who has more judicial experience than Souter, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts had combined before they joined the court.
There is no legitimate reason to oppose this candidate. She is no extremist. No right-wingers seem to complain about judicial activism when it is done by judges they agree with, nor do they complain about judges using standards other than the letter of the law. For a prime example, Clarence Thomas has stated that the constitution is not the highest authority, but that “god” is the ultimate authority by which he makes his decisions (said this right here in Lawrence). Now, by “god” he means HIS idea of what “god” is or is not and “god” only knows what means of direct communication he is privy to that fills him in on the desires of this alleged being whose views supercede the constitution.
Brownback in in no position to lead a fillibuster and a domestic terrorist is in no position to call for him to do so.

Kansas, with Brownback and Roberts, is now the odds-on favorite to unseat Oklahoma (Inhofe, Coburn) as the state with the most demagogic, irresponsible and generally batty senators. If Tiahrt replaces Brownback we'll be a lock for #1.
