Lawrence Originals say Fourth of July celebration a success, but will get better

The Lawrence Originals and the Lawrence GiveBack program sponsored this year’s Fourth of July celebration in Watson Park, contributing a collective $5,000 to pay for the fireworks display.

Organizers estimate about 4,500 people attended the celebration, which featured entertainment, as well as food and beverages from the locally owned restaurants.

“It was really successful for a first-time run,” said Doug Holiday, president of The Lawrence Originals and owner of Bigg’s BBQ, 2429 Iowa. “There’s some … logistical things that we could probably do better next year.”

Holiday said he expects the event to return to downtown Lawrence next year.

“Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” he said.

Lawrence GiveBack organizer Constance Wolfe said she heard no complaints and everyone in attendance behaved: Dogs, children and adults, alike.
