Fitness fun

Speaking of community events … Lawrence residents have another great opportunity to come together this evening for a little fitness and fun.

The LiveWell Lawrence Initiative sponsored by the Douglas County Community Foundation is hoping to attract a record-setting crowd to the workout led by Lawrence’s top exercise inspiration, Don “Red Dog” Gardner. Organizers contacted the Guinness Book of World Records about the event but were discouraged by the red tape of trying to set an official record, so the event will be more of a challenge to other communities to match or exceed Lawrence’s turnout.

Registration for the event at Kansas University’s Shenk Field, Iowa Street and Clinton Parkway, will start at 5:30 p.m. and the workout at 6 p.m. The event is for everyone: children, parents pushing strollers, even people who use wheelchairs. Gardner said he will “tone down” the routine a little, but “I still want people to get their workout.”

The goal of the community workout is to promote the importance of physical activity. You don’t have to be a serious runner or a competitive cyclist to get moving. Even Gardner acknowledges he’s “faded a little. But I can still do something.”

Today that something can be a trip to Iowa and Clinton Parkway to join people from across the community in a mass workout. It sounds like fun.
