Is your purse toxic?

Could your purse be made out of toxic lead?

That handbag may seem cute (and a bargain) until you realize it may contain dangerous levels of lead.

That’s the claim being made by a California consumer rights group that filed a lawsuit against 16 retailers this week, including major chains like Target, Nine West, Aldo US, Forever 21 and Kohl’s.

Dozens of brands are accused by the Center for Environmental Health of making vinyl and faux leather products that contain a level of lead high enough to pose a possible health risk when merely touched. Lead exposure is particularly dangerous to women who are pregnant and to young children.

The Center has fought similar legal battles to make jewelry, herbal remedies and vinyl toys and clothing more lead-free.
