Officers were called to the 1800 block of Carmel Drive about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, after someone spotted a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood.
Police stopped a car matching the description and found five boys inside. The juveniles were taken into custody on child in need of care and auto burglary charges. One of the youths also was arrested on a charge of aggravated burglary.
Officers recovered several stolen items from the car.

OeraLinda not cute at all.
First time I have heard of a curfew. I am unable to find out anything about it on Google.
Sounds like they caught them red handed, pretty much.

Google, boy, you're leaving no stone unturned. Took five seconds to pull up the city code from the city's website, then five seconds to search the PDF:
14-801 children.
It shall be unlawful for any child under the age of eighteen (18) years to wander,
lounge, loaf, loiter or play in, about, or upon any public street, alley, sidewalk, vacant
lot, public place or other place normally accessible to the general public for public
use, whether on foot, or in a vehicle or by any means, during the hours of curfew
which are hereby specified for each day of each week as provided, to wit:
11:00 p.m. Monday to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday;
11:00 p.m. Tuesday to 6:00 a.m. Wednesday;
11:00 p.m. Wednesday to 6:00 a.m. Thursday;
11:00 p.m. Thursday to 6:00 a.m. Friday;
12:30 a.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Saturday;
12:30 a.m. Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Sunday;
11:00 p.m. Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Monday;
unless accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or other person exercising legal
custody of such child. Such prohibition shall not apply to such children under the
age of eighteen (18) years who are en route by the most direct and accessible route
between their homes and authorized places of employment, authorized

There used to be a curfew here. I know because I got a ticket for “minor out after curfew”. My son was sitting on our curb at midnight. Curfew was 11 pm. Why are minors out at 4:15 am?

Being minors, they'll have to pay for damages, get put on diversion, and have to do some community service. That's probably gonna be it…. unfortunately.

In this county, with Branson et al., I bet they get less than that - a hand slap will probably be about it!

They don't need jobs. They need parents. These little creeps should be locked up for about a year. Then, their parents need to have neglect charges filed against them, and face possible jail time. Make an example out of these thugs AND the parents and maybe others will pay attn.

What happens to the kids will depend on their prior criminal history/contact with the court system, and the amount of damage they did. I doubt they get a slap on the wrist, especially for the aggravated burglary charge. However, let's not rush to judgement on the parents. Maybe their parents put them to bed and thought they were in for the night and the juveniles snuck out of the house or thru a window to do this. Just a thought. I'm not a parent, and I'm not trying to excuse these parents, but I remember sneaking out of my parent's house several times as a teenager and staying out late during the summer. Although, I wasn't involved in the kind of crap that these kids are. So let's not rush to judgement on the parents (unless their is proof that the parents are neglectful or just don't care what their kids do).

BTR, sneaking out of the house is one thing. We've all done that at one point while we were teens. Sneaking out and burglarizing numerous cars is a different story. It's obvious these kids were'nt taught right from wrong, and if they think that burglary is ok it's a direct reflection on their parents.

And if the diversion helps them to straighten out their lives, and they become law abiding, tax paying citizens? This has happened to many kids in diversion. Sometimes they just need an adult in their lives. Their parents are obviously not doing their jobs. Instead, it would be better to throw them in prison with adults who can teach them how to be real criminals, instead in diversion where an adult might teach them alternatives. Would you throw a drug addict in prison instead of helping them with rehab, just because not all druggies are helped by rehab? What about those who have been helped?
If this was a violent crime, I would agree that prison might be the answer, but not theft. They may be able to change.

Just because they committed a crime doesn't necessarily mean their parents didn't teach them right from wrong. Just means the teens didn't listen and don't care.

Years ago me and several neighbors had our car window's smashed by this neighborhood kid and as part of his punishment he had to write a hand written letter to all the neighbors apologizing for what he did. Guess what, we never had a problem with this kid again. Sometimes embarrassing them is more of a punishment then “locking them in the slammer”. Hopefully these kids will learn and grow up to be a good part of the community….we all did stupid stuff growing up, learn from it!

oh, but those activities sound so d–-d good! but “loafing” is illegal for kids in lawrence, if they try to do it after 11pm!
