A tall, masked man with a handgun robbed a Lawrence gas station early Saturday morning and took off with an undetermined amount of money.

Police were dispatched to the BP gas station near 31st and Iowa streets at 1:03 a.m. The 27-year-old clerk reported that a man entered the store quickly and displayed a handgun. The suspect grabbed the clerk, took him behind the counter and demanded money.

Lawrence police Sgt. Susan Hadl said the clerk complied with the suspect’s demands. He was then told to kneel in the manager’s office. He remained secluded there until the suspect left.

There were no other customers in the store at the time.

The BP employee said that the suspect, a 6-foot-4 black man between 25 and 35 years old, was fully dressed in black, leaving only his eyes exposed. He wore a black stocking cap, black shoes, black clothing and a black scarf that covered his face.

Hadl said that the clerk, who wasn’t injured in the incident, did not see which direction the suspect fled. It was unknown if there was a getaway car.

Hadl said that police recovered various discarded items while canvassing the area. Officers reported finding a black hat and black gloves near the gas station.

The clerk called police again later that night and reported suspicious activity in the area. Two men in a blue Acura drove by the gas station, looked inside and left. The clerk thought one of the occupants matched the suspect description. Police later located the car in the 1500 block of West 22nd Terrace.

“We’re still investigating both that vehicle and the robbery to see if they meet in the middle someplace,” Hadl said.

Police have reviewed security footage from the gas station and are in the process of acquiring other security tapes from area businesses.

Hadl said additional security tapes could provide information about where the suspect ran or if there was a getaway car.
