The family of Elaine Taylor will celebrate her 85th birthday Feb. 7 with a card shower. Cards and birthday wishes may be sent to Elaine at 4013 Parkway Court, Lawrence, KS 66047.

Velma Skinner, Lawrence, celebrated her 80th birthday party on Dec. 27 at the Eagles Lodge, 1803 W. Sixth St.

The event has hosted by her three sons and their wives, Chuck and Wynne Dillon, DeSoto; Larry and Kathy Dillon, Leawood; and Ross and Leslie Dillon, Las Vegas. The celebration was attended by all of her family and included many friends with music provided by The Four B’s and food catered from Maceli’s.

200 scholastic chess players from 27 different schools converged in Lawrence for the Quail Run Chess Tournament on Jan. 24 at Kansas University in the Kansas Union. First place team trophies went to Southwest Junior High School in the K-9 section and Quail Run in the K-6 section, while third place trophies were garnered by Lawrence High School, Central Junior High School and Quail Run in K-12, K-9, and K-3. Individually, West Junior High School’s Aaron Simon won the K-9 title, and Free State High School’s Peter Lesslie won the K-12 title.

Local medal winners in K-12 were: Roy Wedge, LHS, ninth; Thomas Clark, FSHS, 13th; Jason Chang, LHS, 14th; Doug Rawlings, LHS, 23rd; Carl Peterson, LHS, 24th; and Johnny Chanthalangsy, LHS, 25th.
