From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 29, 1909: “The next few weeks may see a startling shakeup in business circles in Lawrence. It is understood that Albert Emmanuel and William Sullivan, new electric line promoters seeking a franchise here, are trying to purchase the Lawrence Electric Light plant. They would run it in connection with their local electric line system. Nothing is definite but big things could be coming. … The people of Lawrence should open their hearts and homes for the big YMCA convention here next month. More than 500 of the finest young men of Kansas will be our guests and should be treated royally on behalf of the community.”
