Suspect charged in Monday morning rape

A Topeka man was formally charged with one count of felony rape Tuesday in Douglas County District Court.

The 38-year-old suspect allegedly sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman at 1:45 a.m. Monday in the 1600 block of Haskell Avenue, Lawrence police said. Officers tracked down the suspect and arrested him at 7:47 a.m. Monday in the 2100 block of Quail Creek Drive. The victim knew the suspect, police said.

Sgt. Bill Cory said the man is not suspected in a series of rapes that have occurred in Lawrence during the past five years.

The man’s bond was set at $150,000 Tuesday afternoon and he was scheduled to return to court Wednesday afternoon for a hearing in front of Judge Michael Malone, prosecutors said. The man is being held in the county jail.

The Journal-World generally does not name suspects of sex crimes unless there is a conviction.
