How to spot well-made clothes

Get the most for your clothing dollar with these tips in the Feb. 1 issue of Woman’s Day.

Check for these five signs of good quality:

• Eye the pattern: “Look at the fabric to see if the patterns line up at the seams,” says professional stylist Alison Deyette, founder of AliOnTheGo.com. “If they don’t, it’s a sure sign of poor craftsmanship.”

• Check the stitching to see that it lies flat. Any puckering or bumpiness is a red flag of hasty sewing

• Look under the buttons to see if they’re snugly reinforced with loops of thread.

• If a piece you like has a zipper, try it a few times. If properly attached, it will zip smoothly. If it’s sewn too close to the fabric, it will catch and snag.

• Well-made clothes have a wide, even hem, so that alterations can be made easily.
