‘Fashion Photography’ (Book)

It’s a fashion photographer’s job to make sure an outfit is presented in such a way that it looks good, the model looks good and the best assets of both are featured in flattering ways. It’s not just the model, but the techniques used by the photographer, that make the final product look perfect.

Let “Fashion Photography: A Complete Guide to the Tools and Techniques of the Trade,” by Bruce Smith (Amphoto Books, $29.95) be your textbook on how to achieve the same. Smith, who has been involved in fashion and beauty photography for 30 years and now runs photo workshops and a how-to Web site, includes sections on building sets, lighting, shooting for balanced spreads — including leaving visual space for text, directing your model (a standard model release form is included at the end of the book), working with clients, Photoshop tricks and more.

Fan of fashion, but not a photographer? Many sections would still be a good read if you’re curious about how things work behind the scenes of fashion shoots. But this is primarily detailed instruction for those interested in getting involved in the scene.

‘Dora and the Three Little Pigs’ (DVD)

Bilingual child hero Dora and her monkey friend, Boots, embark on four fun adventures in this collection of episodes from “Dora the Explorer,” which were released to DVD last week. In “Dora Saves the Three Little Piggies,” Dora puts a new spin on the story of the pigs and their adversary, the Big Bad Wolf. Also included are “The Mayan Adventure,” “Bouncy Boots” and “The Big Red Chicken’s Magic Show.”

‘What I’m For’ (CD)

Texas crooner Pat Green offers his latest album, “What I’m For.” His latest album might come at a time when country music fans still ask that question about Green: “What is he for?” He’s been around for a while — this is his 11th album — and has developed a huge cult following, especially in the Lone Star State, selling out venues such as the Astrodome in Houston. But he’s also played with bigger stars, including the Dave Matthews Band and Keith Urban. (His current tour brought him to the Granada for a show on Saturday). So while he’s found huge popularity, he still is reaching new audiences. The first single off the album, “Let Me,” broke the top 20 of the country charts.
