Tonganoxie boys hold off Eudora

Tonganoxie — The Chieftain boys advanced to the final of the Tonganoxie Invitational with a 61-50 defeat of Eudora in a semifinal Friday night.

THS (5-3) shot 51 percent from the field and held Eudora (7-2) to 27 percent shooting as the Chieftains methodically built a lead that became too much for the Cardinals to overcome in the fourth quarter.

Eudora’s Justin Ballock had game-highs of 22 points and seven rebounds, but his numbers weren’t enough to counter a balanced Chieftains scoring attack that featured three double-digit scorers — Keaton Schaffer (19), Jamie Everett (12) and sub Brandon Yoder (10) — plus a nine-point effort from Jeremy Carlisle.

The game was tied at 20 with 4:47 to go in the second quarter when Ballock sank a pair of free throws, but six seconds later, Everett was fouled and he hit two of his eight game-high freebies to give the Chieftains the lead for good.

Tonganoxie will play De Soto at 6:30 p.m. today as the team tries to win its first invitational since 1994.

Eudora will take on Lansing in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m.

De Soto 61, Lansing 60, OT

Tonganoxie — De Soto rallied from 11 points down and knocked off Lansing in overtime to advance to the championship game of the Tonganoxie Invitational.

Brendon Hudson scored 13 points and hit three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help De Soto (7-3) claw back into the game. Lansing led, 49-45, in the final minutes, but consecutive threes by Brandan Philbrook and Hudson gave De Soto the lead at 51-49. Lansing’s Curtis Beall hit two free throws in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.

“It was a credit to our guys to just to keep fighting and playing hard,” De Soto coach Jim Bonar said. “The guys that went on just played big minutes. We rotated well and we’re unselfish with the ball and getting other people open.”

De Soto will play Tonganoxie at 6:30 p.m. today.

Girls

Eudora 49, Silver Lake 41

Tonganoxie — Eudora withstood a second half Silver Lake rally and advanced to the Tonganoxie Invitational championship game.

Eudora led, 28-12, at the half, but Silver Lake outscored the Cardinals in the third period. Silver Lake cut the lead to four at 41-37 before the Cardinals (9-1) regrouped late. After missing three consecutive front ends on one-and-ones, Rachel Pyle and Evan Folks both hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.

“Sometimes coming out of the locker room when you are up 16, you have to really focus on it and play like you are down 16, but we didn’t do that,” Eudora coach Ryan Luke said. “And they did a great job. They came out and out-hustled us, out-played us in the second half. But luckily we were fortunate enough to do some things right in the second half and get away into the next round.”

Epperson led Eudora with 19 points, and Mariah Webb and Bailey Scott added 10 a piece for the Cardinals. Eudora will play Lansing at 5 p.m. today.

Lansing 54, Tonganoxie 39

Tonganoxie — The Chieftain girls won’t be defending their Tonganoxie Invitational crown.

Chrissie Jeannin led Tonganoxie with 18 points and Roni Grizzle scored 11 and grabbed eight rebounds.
