Pet groomer charged with piercing kittens

January 24, 2009

— A woman who marketed “gothic kittens” with ear, neck and tail piercings over the Internet has been charged with animal cruelty and conspiracy.

Dog groomer Holly Crawford, 34, was charged Tuesday by humane officers. Her home outside Wilkes-Barre was raided Dec. 17 after the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Luzerne County received a tip from PETA that she was marketing the animals online for hundreds of dollars.

Crawford has said she will plead not guilty.

Crawford told The Associated Press on Thursday that she didn’t see any difference between piercing a cat and piercing a human. She said she used sterile needles and surgical soap and that she checked the kittens several times a day to make sure they were healing properly.

“When I did it, it wasn’t with any cruel intentions,” said Crawford, of rural Ross Township. “They were definitely loved, well-fed, no fleas, clipped nails. And they were happy.”

SPCA Officer Carol Morrison said the kittens had 14-gauge piercings through their ears and submission rings at the napes of their necks. One kitten’s tail was docked.

Of course, people can do this to their babies. Infants with earrings. Protect the kitties, though, since they're more important.

Crawford told The Associated Press on Thursday that she didn’t see any difference between piercing a cat and piercing a human.Other than the fact that a human has to consent to it. We don't even let children do it without parental consent.I was watching a show on cats the other night, it's horrible what breeders have done just over the past few decades to alter cats for their appearence (some with serious health concerns for the 'improved' pets). Now that isn't good enough, we have to stick bits of metal in them to make them decorative?I only hope as part of this idiot's eventual sentence, she is forbidden from working with or owning pets again.

Not defending this woman, but how is this any different than docking a dog's tail or cropping its ears?

I wonder how this is any different than piercing the ears of a baby? Does the law limit how many piercings a human baby can receive?

recently there have been protests in Beijing, because in one province of southern China it is accepted and frequent that people eat cats. no, not making that up. ***about docking dogs' ears, isn't that sometimes a hygenic step that prevents some infections and other trouble? yes, I know that most often it is historic expectations of breeds for show. but if memory serves I think a couple dog breeds get ear docking for health protection. anybody know?

I don't think that people should be mean to kitties.

And in my first negative rebuttal to Marion, I would like to bring up topicality.Topicality is important in a debate atmosphere as it limits the conversation to facts import to the relevant issue being debated. Without topicality, one could argue any number of wild cases that have no bearing to the conversation at hand. Therefor, the negatives position is that the affirmative, Marion, is off topic, and therefor, rendered mute in any argument she may make on this topic.

All of the problems in the world today and we have wasted ink and paper (or kilobytes) on this one??? I say this will go to trial and the person will get a funny look by the judge. Oh, almost forgot the amount of time wasted by all official employees paid by tax dollars. Come on yall we know how this SHOULD end, but we know how it WILL end. Nothing will be done, probably be back in business next week with some type of special animal piercing permit or something

I don't know if you've heard, but Crufts has just bowed to demands to 'not' allow breeds that had been bred without regard to animal health, etc. The BBC,who has the contract for airing the show, said they wouldn't unless the breeds were 'shut out'.thanks Multi. shows what happens when you put government in the business of broadcasting! [tongue in cheek]thanks for the info on the ear cropping, makes sense. ***info:Marion is male...but frequently off topic. pompus, self-agrandizing, boastful, and full of you know what.
