From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 22, 1909: “Two Wamego boys escaped death or injury near here last night when the steamer auto they had purchased exploded. They had bought the car in Kansas City and were en route to home to fix it up and sell it. … Bachelors everywhere are up in arms since many states are considering special taxes on them for “basking in the environments of the single state of blessedness.” So far there has been no such bill in Kansas. … The first efforts to define more clearly the missions of Kansas University and the State College of Agriculture in Manhattan are being taken in the legislature. Among those who favor combining some of the disciplines to save money and make more progress is KU chancellor Frank Strong. Some want some kind of agricultural courses at KU. . . . Coach Hagerman of the KU track team says he believes that Tom Longboat, the famous Indian marathon runner, will visit Lawrence sometime next month. “
