Cost for Chiefs camp growing

? The cost for the community to bring the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp to its turf has grown by $2 million as a result of state financing costs.

Now, the total amount that’s needed from Buchanan County, the city of St. Joseph and Missouri Western State University is $5.7 million. The Chiefs still would contribute $10 million in state tax credits.

The larger price tag still isn’t as much as the community was prepared to pay in the past, when the local governments and university discussed a figure of at least $8 million to $10 million.

Missouri Western officials said they’re trying to get the Chiefs to help with the $2 million in state financing costs.

The university made its pitch to the Buchanan County Commission on Thursday morning after reportedly meeting earlier with some members of the City Council.

“I’m 100 percent for it this time. I was not for it last time,” county Commissioner Dan Hausman told Missouri Western officials. “The county’s supporting it; we’ve just got to figure out how to do it.”

Royal “R.T.” Turner, the presiding county commissioner, said Buchanan County would need to spread its share over several years. The money would come from the county’s economic development funds, which are paid through a capital improvements sales tax.

The camp facility in St. Joseph, about 40 miles north of Kansas City, is expected to open in 2010. It will end the Chiefs’ 19-year tradition of training during the summer at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
