Brother held for forced abortion in cowshed

January 10, 2009

— A 14-year-old Afghan rape victim told the doctor that her brother took her to a cowshed, where he and her mother held her down as he cut out her 5-month fetus with a razor blade, then stitched up the wound with string.

The girl blacked out from the pain but said she remembered seeing her brother hold up the fetus, said Dr. Gulam Mohammad Nader, who treated the teen in a hospital in Bamiyan in central Afghanistan.

The girl was in critical condition Friday at Bagram Air Base outside Kabul, where she was flown the night before after developing a dangerous infection, said Capt. Elizabeth Mathias, a spokeswoman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The 20-year-old brother was arrested and said from his jail cell Friday that he was trying to shield the family from public scorn. In conservative Afghanistan, the shame of sex outside marriage can ruin the lives of a victim and her family.

This Afghan abortionist was arrested and jailed. America's abortionists are lauded and are respected members of society. Disgusting.

There's a big difference between what this 20-year-old did and what practicing physicians do legally in any state or country.

STRS -Wow - that is an absurd comment. Apples to oranges, anyone?

jonas_opines 8 years ago

Sad thing is STRS doesn't likely see any difference at all.

"Sad thing is STRS doesn't likely see any difference at all."Sadder thing... "[the brother] was trying to shield the family from public scorn."Saddest thing, within the existential context... others thinking they "see" a difference (eyes wide shut).

womanwarrior 8 years ago

The difference is choice by the mother. These people live in a society where men are totally in charge, so that should make some of you real happy. In the US, a woman decides what she wants in her body. Rapist rarely even go to jail in these countries. Men just do what they want to women.

Jennifer Forth 8 years ago

No difference. Are you suggesting this 14-yr-old girl should live with the product of the rape,a constant reminder of what was done to her? Talk about backwards thinking!

gl0ck0wn3r 8 years ago

No doubt mimi will blame this on the Jews.

SettingTheRecordStraight 8 years ago

The circumstances in the Afghan case are extreme. Indeed, in addition to the death of the child, the mother was assaulted, and her right to keep the baby was abrogated through the forced abortion. Nevertheless, abortionists in this country are as guilty as the young man who both violated his sister and took the life of her developing child.

fuel_for_the_fire 8 years ago

Abortion is legal in this country. Phsyicians who perform this medical procedure are guilty of nothing.

What's sad is that no one is seeing this girl as the victim, in every event that has occurred during this entire situation. She was victimized by rape, then violated with a forced abortion by an unqualified family member due to fear of public outrage. Now she is hospitalized due to these unfortunate issues & the brother was arrested. The mother should have been arrested fact, the whole community should be held accountable for what has transpired & the girl needs to be placed somewhere to insure that nothing like this could happen to her again.

And what are we doing in our society to see that nothing like this continues to the fetus? Murder is murder regardless of the age of the living party/person/baby/fetus/individual. We expect a culture so far away to be held accountable when we can't/don't take responsibility for changing that which goes on right before us...with "eyes wide shut".

fuel_for_the_fire 8 years ago

Rhonda, what you need to take responsibility for changing are the rates of illiteracy, homelessness, and child abuse that occurs in this country. Get off your high horse and work to change these social issues instead propagating your warped sense of morality.

Rhonda Must have very little concern for her business as her positions on many things would make someone think twice about working with her.

This is the face of the Afghani Islamic effect on women."Behind the veil" of "Inside the burkkah" is a terrible place for a woamn in these modern times.

David Omar 8 years ago

No Asbestos, this is the effect of Afghani culture. Islam gives equal rights to both men and women, but some Muslims choose to not follow that. If you read, and I am sure you haven't, you will see hundreds of passages where God says that we should treat all humans the same but they are not the same physically. I am tired of people using Islam as a whipping block. If you all would read the Islamic Books you would see what it is supposed to be about. But like all religions, it has been destroyed by mankind.

Buffylo: "Talk about backwards thinking!"My thinking is tangential, thank you.And yours??:-)

jonas_opines 8 years ago

Existentially, the difference is enormous.

Could someone please tell me what business Ronda owns?Jaywalker - as always, you make me smile.

ASBESTOS (Anonymous) says…This is the face of the Afghani Islamic effect on women.“Behind the veil” of “Inside the burkkah” is a terrible place for a woamn in these modern times.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Oh that's rich coming from the poster who regularly calls females on this board who disagree with him the equivalent of a female dog.BTW, veiling, female circumcision, etc. all existed prior to Islam. They were all local cultural practices and when those locals were conquered by the Muslims, those practices were adapted to the religious teachings in the area.

Why thanks, fuel. Bozo's MIA today (will miracles ever cease?) and felt something was missing from some of these strings.

My thought is the horrible physical pain this girl must have been in, having her stomach cut open with a razor. There is no way someone could live with a wound like that and I am surprised that she got to a hospital.I would have liked to see her have the baby and love it, and have her family love it also.Hair trigger male pride plus having it drummed into your head every day of your life, that this is the way it is, makes this possible.Have you ever seen Taboo on NatGeo? People all over the world submit to body mutilations that are quite bloody to satisfy their culture. How could a mother hold her daughter down and watch her being cut open? Didn't the screams of agony affect her at all?

jaywalker 8 years ago

"Rhonda Must have very little concern for her business as her positions on many things would make someone think twice about working with her."Get a grip, rooster. I'm pro-choice, and I can think of few reasons to boycott a business, but a biz owner stating they favor 'life'......that'd be a pretty stupid reason to blackball them. 'Whaaaat?! She favors life?! How inhumane!!! I'm not workin' for her!!' Cheese and rice.

Christine Anderson 8 years ago

Cleo, very well said. Same to Ronda, Informed, SRTS, and Marion. I also wonder what sort of mother would not only allow this to happen to her daughter, but take an equal role in doing it???I wonder if the brother was the rapist? Or, was the rapist one of those fine, upstanding Muslim men in the neighborhood who wears his prayer mat out facing Mecca and still finds time to treat women like they were cattle, no- worse that cattle??Islam gives equal rights to men and women? What have you been smoking? Oh, I know. It's just a coincidence that all the countries that allow honor killings, female circumcision, and other sick things just happen to be Islamic? Islam gives equal rights to women? Sure, if their husband or other make relative permits it!

Neither are several of the African countries that have these practices and practiced them pre-dating Islam. There also are many non-Middle Eastern cultures where men and women are not considered equal and do not have equal say.

Anyone forget about this? yeah, and what about this? all the racists on here, even stranger things have happened... in our OWN country!! Some of them are even tied in various perverse ways to (oh my god?!) the Christian faith! And that's exactly what I'm calling it: racism. Hope you're proud of yourselves for latching onto those handholds and spinning this issue in the direction of sweeping generalizations based upon Islamophobia. Awesome. You deserve a pat on the back. And you should know, because you've been there, right? Or maybe your friend or acquaintance was there, so it must be true. Anyway, I think I've met my rant quota for today.
