15-month sentence given in gunfire case

A 21-year-old Topeka man who was convicted for his role in a 2008 Lawrence gunfire incident will serve one year and three months in prison.

District Judge Michael Malone sentenced Emmanuel Rashad Walker on Thursday after Walker pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon related to shots that were fired June 7 during an argument outside the Kwik Shop at 19th and Massachusetts streets.

Walker said he accepted punishment for his role in the fight. Several shell casings were found on New Hampshire Street; bullet holes were found in three nearby houses that night.

Another man, Julius R. Washington, 21, has already been sentenced to serve 19 months in prison for convictions of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy, related to this crime.
