It’s likely to be one last spirited discussion for the Douglas County Commission of Bob Johnson, Charles Jones and Jere McElhaney.

At the 6:35 p.m. meeting today at the County Courthouse, 1100 Mass., commissioners will consider whether to amend the county’s long-range planning document to include a proposed development plan northwest of Lawrence.

Johnson and McElhaney wanted to be able to vote on the area plan before they left office, but Jones had expressed concern about bringing the controversial plan forward so quickly. The City Commission approved the area plan 4-1 in December.

The development group wants to develop nearly 155 acres along the Farmer’s Turnpike northwest of Lawrence, and it includes industrial park development. Neighbors have opposed portions of the plan.

Johnson and McElhaney, both Republicans who did not seek re-election, will be replaced Monday by Republican Jim Flory and Democrat Nancy Thellman.

Jones, a Democrat, has two years left on his current term.
