The local Warm Hearts program to aid the needy pay for heating drew more than $81,000. An eventual goal of $100,000 was on the chart but there was little likelihood that would be achieved. In all, there had been nearly 1,800 donors to the cause.

Michell Renee Goodrick was the first baby born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1984 and proved to be an “early bird.” She had been scheduled to arrive Jan. 12.

Students returning to public schools were finding many unshoveled walkways after recent heavy snows. Some of the walks were on city property rather than private grounds.
