Reno, Nev. — Tyler Hansbrough scored 22 points to lead North Carolina to a victory over Nevada and keep the Tar Heels undefeated with a school-record 13th straight victory by double figures.
Wayne Ellington added 15 points, and Ty Lawson had 11 points and seven assists for North Carolina (13-0), which trailed early, but put together a 10-1 run midway through the first half — capped by Hansbrough’s three-pointer — to take control.
No. 3 Pittsburgh 78, Rutgers 72
Piscataway, N.J. — Sam Young had 18 points, and Brad Wanamaker scored 13 of his career-high 15 in the second half as Pittsburgh wore down Rutgers in the Big East opener for both teams.
No. 5 Duke 92, Loyola, Md. 51
Durham, N.C. — Kyle Singler scored 20 points to help Duke beat Loyola of Maryland.
The Blue Devils played much of the game without starting point guard Nolan Smith, who left because of an apparent left-knee injury, leaving the sophomore to spend most of the day sitting on the bench and wearing an ice bag on his knee.
No. 7 Notre Dame 92, DePaul 82
Rosemont, Ill. — Luke Harangody scored 26 points and had 16 rebounds, and Zach Hillesland scored a career-high 17 to lead Notre Dame to a victory over DePaul in the Big East opener for both teams.
All five starters finished in double figures in scoring for the Fighting Irish, who have won four straight over DePaul.
No. 10 Michigan St. 70, No. 21 Minnesota 58
Minneapolis — Kalin Lucas scored a career-high 24 points, Chris Allen added 13, and Michigan State beat Minnesota to hand the Gophers their first loss of the season.
In the Big Ten opener for both teams, Michigan State (10-2) wore down Minnesota by repeatedly attacking the basket and clogging the lane defensively. The Spartans outrebounded the Gophers, 49-27, and outscored them, 28-18, in the paint.
Utah 66, No. 16 Gonzaga 65
Salt Lake City — Luke Nevill scored 15 points to help Utah beat Gonzaga, sending the Bulldogs to their third straight loss for only the second time in the last eight years.
Trailing by one, Gonzaga had two chances to pull out the victory in the final seconds when Matt Bouldin stole an inbounds pass. He missed a runner, and Austin Daye couldn’t convert the rebound.
Nevill grabbed the rebound and secured the victory as time expired.
UNLV 56, No. 18 Louisville 55
Louisville, Ky. — Oscar Bellfield hit an acrobatic layup with 16.1 seconds remaining to lift UNLV to a stunning victory over Louisville.
No. 22 Xavier 78, Robert Morris 57
Cincinnati — Jason Love scored a career-high 15 points as Xavier took advantage of its size advantage, and freshman guard Brad Redford scored a career-high 15 from behind the arc for the Musketeers.
Wisconsin 73, No. 23 Michigan 61
Ann Arbor, Mich. — Marcus Landry and Trevon Hughes each scored 16 points, and Wisconsin beat Michigan in a Big Ten opener.
Wisconsin has not lost consecutive games since falling to Ohio State and Michigan State in February 2007.
No. 24 Ohio St. 68, Iowa 65
Columbus, Ohio — Jon Diebler scored a career-high 27 points, and Evan Turner hit three late free throws to lead Ohio State past Iowa in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
