Wichita Blake Greenfield and Dustin Walthall went 2-1 for Lawrence High in the first day of the Class 6A state tournament on Friday.
Both individuals will wrestle today in the consolation semifinals. Greenfield, who wrestles in the 140-pound weight class, is now 26-5. Walthall, who wrestles in the 171, moved to 28-13.
“I’m really happy about Blake and Dustin getting into the semifinals. Basically, this year we were dealing with some bad draws,” LHS coach Pat Naughton said of the Lions drawing into five defending state champions. “On the whole, we did pretty well. We just have to keep our focus for (today) and keep plugging on.”
Jake Pfannenstiel (145) and Reece Wright-Conklin (152) went 1-1 for the Lions.
Tien Truong (112), Chris Lane (119) and Ben Seybert (160) went 0-2 for LHS.
As for Free State, the Firebirds sent three wrestlers and all of them finished the day 1-1. They were Jack Caywood (152), Spencer Chestnut (189) and Ammon Austin (285).
Caywood is now 17-10, Chestnut is 18-13 and Austin is 18-10.
“I thought we wrestled pretty well, especially for those guys being their first time there,” FSHS coach Paul Lappin said of Chestnut and Austin. This marks Caywood’s third time at state. “A lot of the time, kids get real wide-eyed, but these kids just wrestled.”
