Police are looking for a man who they say beat a 22-year-old Lawrence resident, stole his wallet and took off in a white SUV.

The incident occurred near 12th and Oread streets about 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The man was returning to his home in the area when he was knocked down and beat in the head.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said that the victim quickly relinquished his wallet. He was unable to get a good look at the suspect. He saw the suspect jump into the passenger seat of an SUV - possibly a Ford Explorer - and drive away from the scene.

The victim then called his credit card company to cancel his cards. He then learned that somebody had tried to use one of his cards at Steak n Shake near 31st and Iowa streets.

Hadl said that police arrived at the Steak n Shake after the suspect left. Restaurant employees said the suspect was a black man wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans. When he was unsuccessful in using the credit card, he told employees that he would go out to his car and get cash. He was last seen driving away in a white SUV.

The victim "had a bump on his head," Hadl said, but denied medical treatment.

Anybody with information about the incidents is asked to call Douglas County dispatchers, 832-7210. Callers who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers, 843-TIPS.

I would assume Steak and Shake doesnt have any video camera's for when the guy cam in that they could give to LPD to help them assist in arrested this guy.

"I would have shot the guy dead in his tracks."

Before he hit you? That'd be murder.

After he hit you? Too late.

Really, the CC rants are not very helpful. Guns may be your 2nd Amendment right, but they are not "the" answer.

I'm picturing it now. A car pulls up, a guy jumps out, before he can hit you over the head, you draw, aim and shoot him. Here there are three other possible endings. The other guy drives away, he gets out shoots at you and misses or he shoots at you and hits. Wiping out the last, the police show up and you are standing there with one or two dead bodies at your feet, a gun in your hand, no physical injuries, your wallet in your pocket and most likely no witnesses. Sure the police are going to thank you, pat you on the head and either drive you home or take you out for hot chocolate! Oh and they'll want to discuss politics with you to see which president to blame for this since it's a poitical crime.

Pinksock, not sure what you're getting at. A suspect's description is given so that anyone who knows him can call the tip line, not so you can prop up your racism.

Because killing people always solves everything. Why just look at the history of the world! Personally I carry pepper spray if I'm out on a Friday or a Saturday night.

Once again, black males are a small percentage of the total demographic yet a large percentage of the crime. Wait, I am SORRY, pointing out fact is racist.

0

jafs 5 years, 5 months ago

Facts aren't racist - interpretations are.

Even if that is an accurate fact, there is more than one possible understanding/interpretation of it.

For example, perhaps the biases/prejudices/systems in our country make it difficult for black men to make an honest/decent living.

0

jafs 5 years, 5 months ago

Another fact I've heard is that black males make up an overly large percentage of folks in prison.

When you realize that many people are locked up for simple drug possession, that may change your take on that subject as well.

Wonder who the guy robbed for the black leather jacket that witnesses said he was wearing; those things are pretty pricey. Hell of a note that someone was beaten and robbed because some parasite got the munchies.

0

jafs 5 years, 5 months ago

And, since simple possession is a felony, once someone has been convicted of that, they may have a very hard time getting a normal job, place to live, etc.

"Going back out to the car for cash" is the standard response for someone caught with a stolen credit card or someone trying to pass a bad check.

I'm really glad the guy that got hit and robbed is okay. Strange that he has been ignored in all the political and racial crap going on this site. Hello Lawrence! Really sad that people can't just talk and express sympathy, sadness, regret, opinion and so on without soap boxers coming in and turning things hateful and ugly. As I said before, bad guy is a parasite and I'm glad the victim is okay.

Beat and rob someone so they can go to Steak 'n Shake of all places?

Instead of signing the back of your credit card, you may write SEE ID instead. Most conscientious store clerks look on the back of the card, then ask for ID. Smarter burglars will take stolen credit cards straight to a self service gas station to fill up.

“I would have shot the guy dead in his tracks.” +++ Oh pleez, you wouldn't have time to assess and draw.At best, you would have been disarmed and blitchslapped. At worst, you would have been shot with your own weapon. And you would looked even stupider than you sound.

LOL!!!

For all the concealed carry fans out there, keep in mind there are very few jurisdictions where the use of deadly force in defense of personal property is considered justified.

If you are defending your life or that of your family, it's a different story, but you can't just pull a weapon and start plinking away.

I like concealed carry as a deterrent. Just don't think you can play Dirty Harry without repercussions. It's not unusual to face civil suits if you do shoot someone-even justifiably. Even worse, you could find yourself facing criminal charges.

Obama is not helping the situation."

Your grammar isn't helping yours.

"Obama is not helping the situation"

"but facts about the situation"

Oh, do enlighten us about "the situation".

"“The situation” is the black population of this nation brutalizing and stealing from every other ethnic group."

Wow, congrats! Didn't realize that there were so many people still following stereotypes like sheep. Although that was so bigoted I don't even think it counts as a stereotype. Disgusting.

And on another note, why go spouting off statistics that you know nothing about? You heard it somewhere, so that means you have the whole story? Take a class, or at least do some varied research before you go talking about things you don't understand.

why does it have to be BLACK MAN why not say a man with a dark complexion.

"why does it have to be black man why not say a man with a dark complexion." Truth in discription, no sugar coating. Black men are responsible for the majority of crime in America. The sooner we acknowledge this the sooner we can move ahead!

Really just their own from what I've read. Funny how lower incomes, poverty, and lower quality education will tend to do that. . . .

. . . oh wait, you're Invictus under that new name aren't you. Never mind. About as much of a waste as with the Original Conservative American (and remember, he's the first Conservative American, and not just a follower!).

Writing "SEE ID" is not a legal signature, and businesses do not have to honor those cards. It's a good idea, but not legal.
It's better to sign your card, and then work with the credit card company to set a limit where the company would flag your card for a signature request with a purchase over the amount or if there are a select number of purchases on the card over a specific period of time.

alm77 5 years, 5 months ago

So, let me get this straight. You're afraid that a group of people with a different skin color and culture are going to be "brutalizing and stealing from [an] other ethnic group"? That would be terrible. I bet white folks wouldn't do that, in like, 150 years!!

Wait a minute, I think hawk has been booted, I can't find him. Boy I bet that made him mad.

Can't wait to see who gets knabbed up by the LPD on this one?? How funny will it be if it is a white male??!! You are all pathetic...

LPD would simply let anyone other than the known affiliates in good ole L-town go anyway. Or maybe they will bring the person in front of Judge Shepard and have his kids given back to their drug-addicted mother also. This town is soo sad. I'm GLAD I no longer live there and will be even happier when I see new legislation turn it around to where it should be.

I've been robbed several times, funny they were all white. I wonder if whites are more likely to get probation or a slap on the wrist instead of jail time as a sentence.

I think the point is that minority groups tend to turn to crime when they have been backed into a corner by the majority. The Irish who were parts of those gangs were reacting to the fact that resources were being denied to them. Say what you'd like, but its pretty undeniable that those feelings are not unfounded in some black men. They fill our prisons at an alarming rate, not because they are more prone to violence, but because our justice system is not colorblind. (Nor is it unaware of financially related social status) Say what you'd like, I'm sure that it will be some racist tirade defending your stance that the Irish and the Germans were handed nothing. Well, untold numbers of Irish died at the hands of poverty, the result of an ethnically biased system. The basic respect for humanity that most people have would say we shouldn't allow that to happen to someone else.

Oh, and people rarely get shot through no fault of their own. Most of the time, its because they were in a less than legal or safe situation.

And as to the uproar regarding the ethnicity of the assailant in this particular crime...its rare that a white person commits a crime and suddenly becomes a representative of their entire race. Something to think about...there are people of every ethnicity who are just sh*tty people. It doesn't translate to everyone who looks like them being the same way.

Slainte.

Not every black person subscribes to the "gangsta rap culture"...the biggest demographic purchasing those albums are middle class white boys. So yeah, its all about the thuggery.

"OldEnuf2BYurDad (Anonymous) says… “I would have shot the guy dead in his tracks.” Before he hit you? That'd be murder."

It depends. If someone is about to hit you with a baseball bat or another similar weapon, one might have a legit case of self-defense against someone using a deadly weapon. Although I would never make a blanket statement like the one above, I certainly wouldn't sit there with my Kimber in the holster while someone was about to rob me. The stuff isn't important - but who knows if the individual will stop at taking your stuff? I'd really rather not take the chance.
