Lawrence man beaten, robbed near KU campus

February 28, 2009, 5:16 a.m. Updated February 28, 2009, 6:11 a.m.

Police are looking for a man who they say beat a 22-year-old Lawrence resident, stole his wallet and took off in a white SUV.

The incident occurred near 12th and Oread streets about 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The man was returning to his home in the area when he was knocked down and beat in the head.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said that the victim quickly relinquished his wallet. He was unable to get a good look at the suspect. He saw the suspect jump into the passenger seat of an SUV - possibly a Ford Explorer - and drive away from the scene.

The victim then called his credit card company to cancel his cards. He then learned that somebody had tried to use one of his cards at Steak n Shake near 31st and Iowa streets.

Hadl said that police arrived at the Steak n Shake after the suspect left. Restaurant employees said the suspect was a black man wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans. When he was unsuccessful in using the credit card, he told employees that he would go out to his car and get cash. He was last seen driving away in a white SUV.

The victim "had a bump on his head," Hadl said, but denied medical treatment.

Anybody with information about the incidents is asked to call Douglas County dispatchers, 832-7210. Callers who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers, 843-TIPS.

"OldEnuf2BYurDad (Anonymous) says… “I would have shot the guy dead in his tracks.” Before he hit you? That'd be murder."

It depends. If someone is about to hit you with a baseball bat or another similar weapon, one might have a legit case of self-defense against someone using a deadly weapon. Although I would never make a blanket statement like the one above, I certainly wouldn't sit there with my Kimber in the holster while someone was about to rob me. The stuff isn't important - but who knows if the individual will stop at taking your stuff? I'd really rather not take the chance.

"the biggest demographic purchasing those albums are middle class white boys."

I know, I was one of them, but eventually your mind matures past the intelligence of a child's. Or most people's brains do.

Not every black person subscribes to the "gangsta rap culture"...the biggest demographic purchasing those albums are middle class white boys. So yeah, its all about the thuggery.

"I think the point is that minority groups tend to turn to crime when they have been backed into a corner by the majority.”

..Or maybe it's just the fun thing to do because they are thugs and llike to brag to their homies that they just jacked someone. Thug life in California, Kansas, anywhere is the same. These dumbasses are actually proud of crimes they commit. It's part of the entire hip hop, gangsta rap culture. Beat your girlfriend up, rob a store, jack someone, listen to repetitive beats, and just don't give a ****.

2:30 a.m. Most of the police are in the parking lot of The Ranch, Jet Lag or Hawk waiting to catch an employee drinking beer after 2a.m. in the bar. After all, it is much more important for our police to make sure no one is having a beer after 2 a.m. then making our streets safe. Did you know the police were in bars checking i.d.'s in 2008 about 700 times. Two cop minimum, at about $20 hr each, 1 hour a stop, that's about $30,000 a year of tax payer money checking bars for minors while a man was beaten two blocks from the police station and a women raped in the alley behind Wheatfileds Bakery at 7p.m. four blocks from the police station. Keep up the good work.

"I think the point is that minority groups tend to turn to crime when they have been backed into a corner by the majority."

What is the Asian American, Indian-American, Korean-American crime rate? Even black immigrants from Africa don't like African Americans or their perverse culture. In this global world more and more people are getting up close and independent look at African Americans in this country and the verdict is out.

0

lovenhaight 5 years, 1 month ago

I think the point is that minority groups tend to turn to crime when they have been backed into a corner by the majority. The Irish who were parts of those gangs were reacting to the fact that resources were being denied to them. Say what you'd like, but its pretty undeniable that those feelings are not unfounded in some black men. They fill our prisons at an alarming rate, not because they are more prone to violence, but because our justice system is not colorblind. (Nor is it unaware of financially related social status) Say what you'd like, I'm sure that it will be some racist tirade defending your stance that the Irish and the Germans were handed nothing. Well, untold numbers of Irish died at the hands of poverty, the result of an ethnically biased system. The basic respect for humanity that most people have would say we shouldn't allow that to happen to someone else.

Oh, and people rarely get shot through no fault of their own. Most of the time, its because they were in a less than legal or safe situation.

And as to the uproar regarding the ethnicity of the assailant in this particular crime...its rare that a white person commits a crime and suddenly becomes a representative of their entire race. Something to think about...there are people of every ethnicity who are just sh*tty people. It doesn't translate to everyone who looks like them being the same way.

Slainte.

Max 1

Was anyone in the media or academia justifying Irish thugery by citing 800 years of violent oppression by England? I think not.

Was anyone profiting from Irish violence?, Were they used as muscle against good citizens?, An excuse to further tax working people?

Were citizens taxed to feed their offspring? To pay to educate their illegitimate children?

I've been robbed several times, funny they were all white. I wonder if whites are more likely to get probation or a slap on the wrist instead of jail time as a sentence.

Two of my brother’s in-laws were shot by black men in two separate crimes, in Kansas, through no fault of their own. By the grace of god they both lived.

Making up 6% of the population they commit a disproportionate number of crimes in this state and around the country.

In this country “Blacks are statistically 50 times more likely to attack whites than vice versa"

If the rates were reversed how would media cover the crimes?

In fact if a black person is merely offended it makes national news.

0

Model 1911A1, loaded with 230 gr,FMJ:and the "black man wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans" would be down on the ground and the innocent victim safe.

Of course, a Glock 21 would do as well.

Can't wait to see who gets knabbed up by the LPD on this one?? How funny will it be if it is a white male??!! You are all pathetic...

LPD would simply let anyone other than the known affiliates in good ole L-town go anyway. Or maybe they will bring the person in front of Judge Shepard and have his kids given back to their drug-addicted mother also. This town is soo sad. I'm GLAD I no longer live there and will be even happier when I see new legislation turn it around to where it should be.

We Don't Want The Irish (Blazing Saddles) http://wilstar.com/midi/noirish.wav

"No Irish Need Apply" “The Irish fill our prisons, our poor houses. … Scratch a convict or a pauper, and the chances are that you tickle the skin of an Irish Catholic. Putting them on a boat and sending them home would end crime in this country.” (Chicago Post, 1868)

"[Irishmen] are the most ignorant and consequently the most obstinate white men in the world, and I have seen enough to satisfy me that, with few exceptions, ignorance and vice go together" -Philip Hone, NYC mayor (1828-51)

http://thehistorybox.com/ny_city/nycity_crime_highlights_article00137.htm [New York Gangs] Five Points: The gangs of New York terrorized the city, waged hundreds of street battles, and won the community the reputation of the most wicked city in the world. The first gangs consisted almost entirely of Irishmen. Forty Thieves: The first criminal gang in New York City , a group of Lower East Side Irish immigrants who served as political sluggers as well as muggers and holdup men. The gang was formed in the early 1820's. Each man was expected to bring in a certain amount of loot , and if they didn't they would be replaced by someone else. Gophers: They were one of the last of the all-Irish gangs of New York. They controlled the territory between Seventh and Eleventh avenues from 42nd Street to 14th Street. Brawlers, muggers and thieves, they gained their name because they like to hide out in basements and cellars.

So, let me get this straight. You're afraid that a group of people with a different skin color and culture are going to be "brutalizing and stealing from [an] other ethnic group"? That would be terrible. I bet white folks wouldn't do that, in like, 150 years!!

Nothing like a minor crime to bring out gun nuts and racists, not sure they aren't one and the same. In 99% of cases they fit both profiles.

0

Roland Gunslinger 5 years, 1 month ago

With CCW- no one said that the gun had to be fired. Sometimes just seeing the weapon would be enough to have the perp run back to his vehicle and flee. No one gets shot no one gets robbed and beaten.

Writing "SEE ID" is not a legal signature, and businesses do not have to honor those cards. It's a good idea, but not legal.
It's better to sign your card, and then work with the credit card company to set a limit where the company would flag your card for a signature request with a purchase over the amount or if there are a select number of purchases on the card over a specific period of time.

Wow, congrats! Didn't realize that there were so many people still following stereotypes like sheep. Although that was so bigoted I don't even think it counts as a stereotype. Disgusting.

And on another note, why go spouting off statistics that you know nothing about? You heard it somewhere, so that means you have the whole story? Take a class, or at least do some varied research before you go talking about things you don't understand.

0

flamingdragon 5 years, 1 month ago

You bad grammar is terrifying, you all. some one with lightning bolt in hand will get this black man zapped in his pretty gangsta-rod soon enough. Concealed carry while stumbling home at 2 in the morning from the downtown bars? I don't think you would have had time to draw your little weapon, let alone hit anything. Then, mr. rapper-gangsta would take away your pea-shooter and bust cap in yo' foot or somewhere very bad. Here in China, we take Gangstas to jails, and usually give them a very fair trial, although you americans say we don't. then, we give them a very fair death with ak-47. problem solved, and they don't make more problem children either.

For all the concealed carry fans out there, keep in mind there are very few jurisdictions where the use of deadly force in defense of personal property is considered justified.

If you are defending your life or that of your family, it's a different story, but you can't just pull a weapon and start plinking away.

I like concealed carry as a deterrent. Just don't think you can play Dirty Harry without repercussions. It's not unusual to face civil suits if you do shoot someone-even justifiably. Even worse, you could find yourself facing criminal charges.

Beat and rob someone so they can go to Steak 'n Shake of all places?

Instead of signing the back of your credit card, you may write SEE ID instead. Most conscientious store clerks look on the back of the card, then ask for ID. Smarter burglars will take stolen credit cards straight to a self service gas station to fill up.

0

Multidisciplinary 5 years, 1 month ago

And how many of those 'possession' incarcerations were actually the result of someone being investigated for a violent crime, robbery, other? They investigate, find the probable perp, arrest them, find drugs in their possession. The DA then saydswe don't have enough evidence to prosecute for said 'greater offense', but, they CAN lock them up for possession, and get them off the streets.

Sounds like a good plan. Worked for some big names in crime. Tax evasion, etc. Can't wait until they put some bad people in jail for duplicating DVDs for their own use, when they were actually big time drug dealers, but the DVD's were the easy bust.

Really sad that people can't just talk and express sympathy, sadness, regret, opinion and so on without soap boxers coming in and turning things hateful and ugly. As I said before, bad guy is a parasite and I'm glad the victim is okay.

"Going back out to the car for cash" is the standard response for someone caught with a stolen credit card or someone trying to pass a bad check.

0

jafs 5 years, 1 month ago

And, since simple possession is a felony, once someone has been convicted of that, they may have a very hard time getting a normal job, place to live, etc.

0

Dragon_Wheels 5 years, 1 month ago

Wonder who the guy robbed for the black leather jacket that witnesses said he was wearing; those things are pretty pricey. Hell of a note that someone was beaten and robbed because some parasite got the munchies.

0

jafs 5 years, 1 month ago

Another fact I've heard is that black males make up an overly large percentage of folks in prison.

When you realize that many people are locked up for simple drug possession, that may change your take on that subject as well.

0

jafs 5 years, 1 month ago

Facts aren't racist - interpretations are.

Even if that is an accurate fact, there is more than one possible understanding/interpretation of it.

For example, perhaps the biases/prejudices/systems in our country make it difficult for black men to make an honest/decent living.

0

TheOriginalCA 5 years, 1 month ago

Once again, black males are a small percentage of the total demographic yet a large percentage of the crime. Wait, I am SORRY, pointing out fact is racist.

Pinksock, not sure what you're getting at. A suspect's description is given so that anyone who knows him can call the tip line, not so you can prop up your racism.

0

redmoonrising 5 years, 1 month ago

I'm picturing it now. A car pulls up, a guy jumps out, before he can hit you over the head, you draw, aim and shoot him. Here there are three other possible endings. The other guy drives away, he gets out shoots at you and misses or he shoots at you and hits. Wiping out the last, the police show up and you are standing there with one or two dead bodies at your feet, a gun in your hand, no physical injuries, your wallet in your pocket and most likely no witnesses. Sure the police are going to thank you, pat you on the head and either drive you home or take you out for hot chocolate! Oh and they'll want to discuss politics with you to see which president to blame for this since it's a poitical crime.

People need to be watchful of their surroundings. I remember one time at a grocery store this man started walking in the direction of my child and myself. The man was not walking from or towards the grocery store. I quickly hurried to the car, locked the doors, and started the engine so as to get the most distance away. Once far enough away, I parked the car and got out to buckle my child up. There might be some that scream about safety, but I had not driven out on the roads, but was still in the big lot of the stores in that vicinity. This was at the Dillon's store over by Wakarusa. The reason I took this action was because my intuition was giving me vibes to get away from this individual. This person could of been harmless, but I was not going to take any chances.
