Topeka The Senate Judiciary Committee will decide Wednesday whether to endorse a bill abolishing the Kansas death penalty.
Chairman Tim Owens, an Overland Park Republican, said Friday he wanted to give committee members time to talk to their constituents and consider the proposal. The panel just concluded two days of hearings on the measure.
Supporters say abolishing the death penalty will save the state money at a time when it’s trying to cut spending because of the economy. Opponents say there wouldn’t be any real savings.
Kansas is among eight states this year considering the repeal of the death penalty. The state reinstated the death penalty in 1994, but there have been no executions. Ten people have been sentenced to death.
