Boathouse dedication upcoming at KU

February 27, 2009

The Kansas University rowing team will dedicate the new Kansas Rowing Boathouse at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Burcham Park.

The dedication will take place during a three-hour open house from 1 to 4 p.m. and coincides with Kansas’ 40-year anniversary of women’s sports.

Since the boathouse construction began, the park has been all but inaccessible. Now that KU has finished construction of the boathouse, will the city begin to do what is really important: repairing the trails, particlarly the river trail? Part of the river trail is collapsing into the river and much of it is covered in sand from the flood several years ago which makes it almost impossible to traverse. Most of the traiIs were damaged in the flood, and boathouse construction simply exacerbated the problem. I also hope that KU will transport rowers there by bus or do something to manage student parking in the park so that there is room for the rest of us to park and use the park for whom and what it was intended, a recreation area for all of the people who live in Lawrence and not just the rowers from KU.

Uh, the rowers are people who live in Lawrence. Sounds like you don't really want the parks to be for everyone in town, just the people you see fit to use it.

There is, however, a park where you get to decide who comes in, and out, and when. It's called your backyard. Use it until you can embrace the idea of "public property".

I highly doubt the boathouse construction (which is no where near the bike trails) had anything to do with the deterioration. As for busing the girls out to the river...they have never done that so why would they start now? And from what I have seen the majority of people that use that park are dealing drugs in the parkiing lot or drinking beer under the gazebo, so you should actually be happy all the rowers are down there taking up all the parking spots!

Congrats KU Rowing on your beautiful building!

xbusguy: Every day, but especially when people preach about how everone should be able to use public property, then, in the same breath, feel that they can complain about people or groups using said property.

What can I say? A little hypocrisy gets the blood pumping.

I often visit this part of the river front to just check on the river, take photos and bird watch. There are seldom more than two or three people there while I am there. I never saw anything "nasty" going on.

I enjoy watching rowing, too, and think it's a wonderful thing to have the new facility for the KU rowing team. I'll be there at the opening.

Enjoy, people!
