— A Washington group has filed a complaint with the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee against Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback.

The complaint was filed Wednesday by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW.

It concerns a recent anti-abortion fundraising letter sent out under Brownback’s name.

The letter criticizes Democratic senators who are Catholic but support abortion rights.

The letter was from a conservative group, Catholic Advocate, but it contained Brownback’s name and title. CREW contends the mailing violates a Senate rule against members using their letterhead for fundraising appeals.

Brownback spokesman Brian Hart said the senator asked Catholic Advocate to stop using the letter even before CREW complained.

He also said Brownback’s office believes there was no violation of Senate rules.

For the record, I am pro-life. And I would not trust Sen. Brownback as far as I could toss an apple.

I urge everyone to actually read what the Freedom of Choice Act is. Basically, it's making it so that if a women's health is at risk, late term abortion could be used to save her life, which is now not part of the current law, thanks to the right wing fringe that got the laws changed under Bush. The basics of the law:

a) STATEMENT OF POLICY- It is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child, to terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability, or to terminate a pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman.

(b) PROHIBITION OF INTERFERENCE- A government may not--

(1) deny or interfere with a woman's right to choose--

(A) to bear a child;

(B) to terminate a pregnancy prior to viability; or

(C) to terminate a pregnancy after viability where termination is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman; or

(2) discriminate against the exercise of the rights set forth in paragraph (1) in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.

(c) CIVIL ACTION- An individual aggrieved by a violation of this section may obtain appropriate relief (including relief against a government) in a civil action.

Notice the term viability. It means "that stage of pregnancy when, in the best medical judgment of the attending physician based on the particular medical facts of the case before the physician, there is a reasonable likelihood of the sustained survival of the fetus outside of the woman."

The right wing nuts will tell you that women are walking in 8 months pregnant and say kill my baby. That is not that case. Late term abortions are to save the mothers life, not because you decided that late you didn't want the baby. These Catholics and people like Brownback would rather see the mother die than allow a late term abortion to save her life. Notice that because viability is a main factor, if the mother's health was at risk and the baby could be viable with medical help (like a premie birth), they don't kill the baby. More right wing spin has made that the common belief.
