Create a garden getaway in your own backyard

You can have the perfect vacation, full of much-needed rest and rejuvenation, in the comfort of your own yard. Think of it this way: Put as much (or even less) energy into planning your staycation as you would a normal vacation, and your new and improved yard will still be there when you go back to work.

Your local garden centers, local landscapers and K-State Research and Extension can help.

Here’s how to start planning your staycation: Either hire a landscaper (think of him/her as your new travel agent) or start planning for your own yard in the way you would study and plan for a travel destination. See the “travel guides” below.

Think about what would make your yard more inviting. Maybe you want an array of colorful flowers to brighten the view or a collection of shrubs and trees to shield the worries of the outside world. A water feature will add the soothing sound of running water, or maybe your yard is ready for a new patio, some new outdoor furniture or even a new fireplace or grill.

A great benefit of doing a little landscaping to create your perfect summer getaway is that the new trees and shrubbery are sure to increase your property value. Several economic studies report value increases of as much as 15 percent.

What to bring on your staycation: Comfortable clothes, comfortable shoes and enough lawn chairs for the whole family. Depending on your plans, sunscreen and/or insect repellent might be warranted.

Where to eat: How about cooking over that new outdoor fireplace?

Things to see: Blooming flowers, birds, and squirrels that probably visit your yard more than you ever realized. You might even detect some newly gained peace of mind while relaxing in your improved garden hideaway. If you do some of the work yourself, you will probably notice the health benefits of physical activity. You can also rest assured knowing there are long-term health benefits; a recent study of older adults at K-State showed better hand strength, overall physical health and self-esteem in gardeners vs. non-gardeners.

The best things about a staycation: no packing, no driving, no plane tickets, no hotel rooms, and you’ll never have to hear, “Are we there yet?”
