Burris out
The longer Roland Burris talks, the more obvious it is that he should resign from the U.S. Senate.
It seems that every time Roland Burris discusses his ascension to a U.S. Senate seat representing Illinois, the story is altered in some way, adding to the perception that he might be lying or at least employing some self-protective spin.
Commented the Chicago Tribune: “The benefit of the doubt already had been stretched thin and taut by the time he (Burris) offered his third version of the events leading to his appointment to the Senate. It finally snapped like a rubber band, popping him right on that long Pinocchio nose of his, when he came out with version four.”
Once, Burris said he’d had no contact with anyone involved with Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s alleged attempt to sell the Senate seat that had been vacated by now-President Barack Obama. Then it appeared he might have discussed the prospect of a campaign contribution for the governor.
We’ve now had four versions of what happened and why, and, each time, Burris’ story looks fishier. As almost always happens in cases such as this, telling the full truth from the outset can prevent all sorts of difficulties — such as being forced to resign from the Senate after the truth comes out.
From the outset, it was clear that the egotistical Burris was determined to get to Congress. But as he kept trying to answer questions about his status and his credibility, his pursuit of that goal was even more condemning.
Unfolding events have tarnished the credibility not only of Burris but also Illinois Democrats who have backed his charade. Many say it would have been far better to fill the vacancy left by Obama by letting Illinois voters choose a successor rather than going through a highly politicized and most likely corrupt appointment procedure.
Burris can complain, protest and charge improper treatment all he chooses, but he no longer can be accepted as the caliber of person who should be holding a seat in the U.S. Senate.
Blagojevich was ridiculous in his efforts to avoid impeachment and continue as Illinois governor. Burris and the questionable tactics he has employed to get to the Senate and justify his rhetoric are equally ridiculous. If he does not resign, the same processes that forced Blagojevich out of office should be put into motion.
