From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 21, 1909: “Registering one person a minute for more than eight hours yesterday, city clerk Frank Brooks closed the poll books at 10 o’clock last night with the largest voter registration Lawrence has ever known, more than 4,115 after a preliminary count. … Before they are admitted to their classes Tuesday morning, every pupil of Central School must present a certificate showing that they have been properly vaccinated. Such was the order by officers of the school board after a girl was quarantined for smallpox yesterday. “
