City to burn native prairie grasses

Area residents may notice some burning grass around Lawrence this spring.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department plans to burn several areas of native prairie grass between now and May 15.

The city has 15 sites throughout the city where burning will need to take place. The practice is used to help keep native grass areas healthy by stimulating new growth.

Some of the areas where burning will take place, include: Prairie Park; Riverfront Park; DeVictor Park; Naismith Valley Park between 23rd and 27th streets; and the South Wind Prairie near 27th Street and the South Lawrence Trafficway.
