Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 19, 1909: “‘I’m giving the people a last warning,’ said Marshal Carmean today. ‘If they don’t clean the snow and slush off their walks, they will be hauled into police court.’ There is a city ordinance that the marshal says will be enforced. … North Lawrence again is slighted by the electric street car franchise the city may sign. Competition is again heating up as three firms seek the franchise. No action has been taken and little progress is being made right now. … Herbert Hadley, governor of Missouri, will be in Lawrence to attend the big banquet of the Phi Psi fraternity. He is a Lawrence boy who joined the fraternity at KU and many other notable persons are due here for the dinner. … A blood-spattered note signed by George Hunt of Kansas City was found after his suicide at the Eldridge House. He left full instructions about the status of his body. He had been in Lawrence to visit his sister. His wife has not been located in Kansas City. There is no evidence about the cause of the tragedy.”
