Former Lawrence man pleads guilty to ID theft

A 33-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man, who once lived in Lawrence, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for an identity theft scheme in Lawrence and the Kansas City area that totaled more than $78,000.

William A. Morris had pleaded guilty in September to one count of aggravated identity theft and one count of wire fraud in connection with stealing Social Security numbers and credit card numbers from customers of an Oklahoma-based satellite dish service company he started in 2007.

Acting U.S. Attorney Marietta Parker’s office had alleged that Morris and two co-defendants used the credit card numbers to make unauthorized purchases and also generated counterfeit checks by obtaining bank account and routing numbers from checks used by customers to pay the business.

Co-defendants Barry S. Griffin, of Kansas City, Kan., will be sentenced April 27, and Lisa Thomas, Kansas City, Mo., faces an April 6 trial in the case.

Prosecutors accused defendants of fraudulently buying goods and services from several Lawrence businesses, including Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, Old Navy, Payless Furniture Outlet, Sears and Target.
