President to send 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan

February 17, 2009, 3:06 p.m. Updated February 18, 2009, 12:31 a.m.

— President Barack Obama approved adding some 17,000 U.S. troops for the flagging war in Afghanistan, his first significant move to change the course of a conflict that his closest military advisers have warned the United States is not winning.

“This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires,” Obama said in a statement.

That was a slap at his predecessor, George W. Bush, whom Obama has accused of slighting urgent national security needs in Afghanistan in favor of war in Iraq.

The White House said the new commander in chief would send a Marine unit and one additional Army brigade to Afghanistan this spring and summer. The United States has slightly more than 30,000 troops in the country now.

I'm there with a blood splashed photo of the President calling him a War Criminal and comparing Joe Biden to Joe Stalin. I wonder how many hippies will flip me off?

A liberal speaks, read very carefully.

If G.W. Bush had done the right thing and dropped a few nukes where they belonged the entire mess would have been over in a few hours.

At least this President has the where-with-all to place troops where the trouble began in the first place.

I read very carefully and have determined you are a nut job. Besides the previous war criminal sent troops into Afghanistan just like the current war criminal is sending troops. Perhaps the current war criminal will drop some nukes where the previous war criminal failed.
