Free State Brewery, 636 Mass., is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week, in part by donating the proceeds of today’s sales to the Social Service League of Lawrence. The league, the oldest service organization in Lawrence, operates a thrift store at 905 R.I.

The brewery also is offering discounts: on beers Thursday, and on meals and desserts Sunday and Monday for people celebrating a birthday that is the same as Free State’s, Feb. 23.

I miss Free State all the time. It's one of the few things Austin doesn't have, is a really first-rate brewery restaurant. We used to have the Bitter End, but it burned down the day after the first time I ate there (I had nothing to do with it!). There is no March Mustard Madness in Austin.

Congratulations to Free State on 20 great years and here's hoping they have at least 20 more!

Best beer and cheese soup in history! Rest of the grub is outstanding too. Service friendly and bustling.

Thanks for being no smoking too - even though the owner was dragged kicking and screaming to the altar of smoke free environments!

May the Lord bless!

I finally found an article today that isn't littered with ideological dolts in the commenting section.

Cheers to Free State!

I was there opening night. Had a beer and the cheese soup. Free State is one of the best things about Lawrence!
